working on a doctoral thesis and interested in researching the future of the European Union, its competitiveness and its strategic autonomy? <strong>The Yuste European and Ibero-American Academy Foundation<\/strong> is offering 10 \u2018Carlos V European Prize\u2019 European Research and Mobility Grants in European Studies, aimed at researchers who are writing a doctoral thesis on issues relating to European integration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 2026 call for applications is dedicated to <strong>\u2018European strategic autonomy: industrial competitiveness, economic governance, pragmatic federalism and decision-making mechanisms in the EU\u2019<\/strong>, in relation to Mario Draghi\u2019s career and contributions to the process of European integration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The scholarships enable recipients to carry out research, take part in an international doctoral seminar and contribute to a collective publication with a prestigious publisher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>10 research and mobility grants<\/strong>, each worth <strong>\u20ac2,500.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Funding for study and documentary research within Europe.<\/li>\n<li>Support for mobility to carry out research work and take part in the planned activities.<\/li>\n<li>Participation in the Carlos V European Prize Doctoral Seminar on Multidisciplinary Studies of Contemporary Europe.<\/li>\n<li>Opportunity to publish the research findings in a collective volume published by the Yuste Foundation in collaboration with a prestigious publishing house.<\/li>\n<li>Membership of the Yuste Euro-Ibero-American Alumni Network.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Research areas and topics:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Proposals must address European strategic autonomy and its relationship with competitiveness, economic governance and the political and institutional integration of the European Union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main lines of research include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>European strategic autonomy:<\/strong> sovereignty, capacity for action and the defence of the Union\u2019s interests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic and monetary integration:<\/strong> the evolution of the single market, Economic and Monetary Union and the role of the European Central Bank.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic governance:<\/strong> coordination of economic and fiscal policies, budgetary rules and common financing mechanisms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Competitiveness and innovation:<\/strong> productivity, investment, research, development and the ability of European businesses to compete internationally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Industrial policy and the single market:<\/strong> strategic technologies, supply chains and critical raw materials.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Digital, green and energy transition:<\/strong> their implications for European competitiveness and resilience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>International relations and geopolitics:<\/strong> economic dependencies, trade policy and relations with other powers and regions, particularly Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/li>\n<li><strong>European federalism and decision-making:<\/strong> differentiated integration, enhanced cooperation, unanimity and qualified majority voting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social and territorial dimension:<\/strong> employment, social cohesion, social protection, education and youth mobility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Democracy and European values:<\/strong> the rule of law, fundamental rights, transparency and accountability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mario Draghi\u2019s report:<\/strong> proposals for the future of European competitiveness, obstacles to their implementation and possible solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Research must incorporate a multidisciplinary perspective, which may combine historical, economic, political, institutional, legal, geopolitical and social approaches.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Requirements and candidate profile:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who meet the following requirements may apply for these scholarships:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hold the <strong>nationality of a country included<\/strong> in the call for applications. <strong>Nationals of third countries<\/strong> may also apply provided they can prove that they were resident in one of the eligible countries prior to the publication of the call for applications.<\/li>\n<li>Be <strong>enrolled on a PhD programme at a university in an eligible country<\/strong> and be working on a doctoral thesis.<\/li>\n<li>Be conducting research in History, Political Science, Economics, Law, other disciplines within the Humanities and Social Sciences, or other branches of science, provided that the topic is in line with the focus of the call for applications.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate a <strong>level<\/strong> <strong>of English or Spanish<\/strong> <strong>equivalent to or higher than B2<\/strong> on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), where neither of these languages is the candidate\u2019s mother tongue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Not have previously been awarded a \u2018Carlos V European Prize\u2019 Research and Mobility Grant in European Studies by the Yuste Foundation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The call for applications is open to candidates from the Member States of the European Union and from numerous countries in the Western Balkans, the Eastern Neighbourhood, the Southern Mediterranean, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, North America and other regions. Please consult the terms and conditions to check whether your country is included in the list of eligible countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Duration and financial conditions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The call for applications sets out the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Number of grants:<\/strong> 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Individual grant:<\/strong> \u20ac2,500 per recipient.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Total funding:<\/strong> \u20ac25,000.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Funding:<\/strong> the budget of the Yuste European and Ibero-American Academy Foundation for the financial year 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Payment will be made in three instalments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First payment:<\/strong> two-fifths of the grant following the final decision to award it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second payment:<\/strong> one-fifth following the doctoral seminar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Third payment:<\/strong> the remaining two-fifths upon submission of the final version of the thesis for publication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Foundation undertakes to make the payments within a maximum of three months of the decision on the call for applications, in accordance with the conditions set out in the terms and conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Activities and obligations of the beneficiaries:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Successful applicants must fulfil the following obligations:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Submit an outline and a summary of their research in English or Spanish, not exceeding 8,000 characters, including spaces. If submitted in Spanish, an English version must also be attached.<\/li>\n<li>Attend the entire Carlos V \u2013 Mario Draghi European Prize Doctoral Seminar, which will take place at the Monastery of San Jer\u00f3nimo de Yuste, in Extremadura.<\/li>\n<li>Submit the full text of the research in one of the two working languages, with a maximum length of 50,000 characters, including spaces and footnotes.<\/li>\n<li>Agree to join the Euro-Ibero-American Network of Yuste Alumni.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in the launch of the collective publication which will bring together the final versions of the research papers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The date of the seminar and the deadlines for submitting papers will be communicated to the selected candidates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Required documentation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The application must be completed using the relevant form provided in the call for applications and must be accompanied by the following documentation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A copy of your tax identification number (NIF) or valid passport.<\/li>\n<li>A copy of the residence permit, where applicable to nationals of countries other than those eligible.<\/li>\n<li>Proof of enrolment on a PhD programme.<\/li>\n<li>Academic transcript.<\/li>\n<li>Documentation supporting the claimed requirements and merits.<\/li>\n<li>Letter of recommendation from the supervisor of the doctoral thesis.<\/li>\n<li>Statement of commitment in accordance with the template set out in the call for applications.<\/li>\n<li>Proof of English or Spanish language proficiency at level B2 or above, where this is not the applicant\u2019s mother tongue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Foundation may request the submission of the original documents to verify the copies provided.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Selection criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applications will be assessed through a competitive selection process. The selection panel will take into account both academic and professional merits, as well as the quality and suitability of the research project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The maximum score will be <strong>100 points<\/strong>, allocated across the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Academic and professional merits:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Additional university qualifications.<\/li>\n<li>Average mark on the academic transcript.<\/li>\n<li>Academic awards, scholarships and research grants.<\/li>\n<li>International research placements.<\/li>\n<li>Scientific publications related to the subject area of the call for applications.<\/li>\n<li>Professional experience related to the priority areas.<\/li>\n<li>Language proficiency in official languages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Quality of the research project:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus of the contribution.<\/li>\n<li>Relevance to the theme and priorities of the call for proposals.<\/li>\n<li>Quality of the proposed topic.<\/li>\n<li>Quality of the project structure.<\/li>\n<li>Quality of the research methodology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Scholarships will be awarded to the applicants with the highest scores. In the event of a tie, priority will be given to the applicant with the higher overall average mark on their academic record.
