This funding forms part of \u2018Choose Europe\u2019, the European Commission\u2019s initiative to position the EU as the world\u2019s leading magnet for scientific talent, research and technological innovation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/pexels-thisisengineering-3861457-scaled.jpg\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The President of the European Commission, <strong>Ursula <\/strong><\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">von der Leyen,<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\"> said: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><span dir=\"auto\">\u2018Researchers choose Europe. They know that we value and support science, and that Europe offers an environment conducive to the development of talent and ideas. For 30 years, the Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Actions have helped researchers from all over the world to build their careers in Europe. With this additional funding, we are reinforcing our commitment to research excellence and ensuring that European societies and economies can benefit from the most cutting-edge knowledge, ideas and innovation.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation, Ekaterina <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Zaharieva,<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\"> announced the funding at the high-level event<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">\u2018Celebrating 30 Years of MSCA: Curiosity That Changes the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> World\u2019, which is taking place in Brussels.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span dir=\"auto\">This increase in funding responds to the record demand for research career opportunities in Europe. The call for MSCA 2026 postdoctoral grants received <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">21,627 applications from researchers worldwide<\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> \u2013 the highest number of proposals received for any funding action in over 40 years of the EU\u2019s research and innovation framework programmes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The additional funding will strengthen two of the programme\u2019s key actions: <\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> MSCA <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">postdoctoral fellowships<\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">doctoral networks,<\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> which are estimated to provide further opportunities for a further 700 researchers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Investing in Europe\u2019s research talent<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The announcement follows the Commission\u2019s adoption <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">of<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">the <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">amended Horizon Europe Work Programme for 2026\u20132027<\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> on 29 September. Horizon Europe is the EU\u2019s main funding programme for research and innovation, running from 2021 to 2027 with a budget of nearly \u20ac100 billion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">With this additional investment, the budget allocated to both postdoctoral fellowships and doctoral networks will reach its highest levels since they were launched. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">By 2027, the budget for postdoctoral fellowships will rise to \u20ac459 million, and the budget for doctoral networks to \u20ac645 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">According to current estimates, the 2027 call for postdoctoral fellowships could support more than 1,800 postdoctoral researchers, whilst the 2027 call for doctoral networks could support more than 2,000 doctoral candidates. The Commission estimates that, following the announced increase in funding, a further 700 researchers and doctoral candidates will be added to that figure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">By 2026, the budget for postdoctoral fellowships will reach 434 million euros, whilst doctoral networks will receive 628 million euros.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">30 years of curiosity that is changing the world<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span dir=\"auto\">2026 marks the <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">30th anniversary of the Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">. Since its inception in 1996, more than 150,000 researchers have taken part in the programme, including <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">23 Nobel laureates<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">. What began as a programme supporting around 800 researchers a year now supports around 8,000 annually.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span dir=\"auto\">To mark the anniversary, the Commission has also launched <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">a new interactive publication<\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> featuring over 100 stories from the MSCA community.
