{"id":170688,"date":"2026-07-31T03:00:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T01:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=170688"},"modified":"2026-07-30T10:58:04","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T08:58:04","slug":"unodc-and-the-eu-warn-of-rising-human-trafficking-for-criminal-activities-in-scam-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/unodc-and-the-eu-warn-of-rising-human-trafficking-for-criminal-activities-in-scam-centres\/","title":{"rendered":"UNODC and the EU warn of rising human trafficking for criminal activities in scam centres"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Human trafficking for forced criminality is increasing across the world, with authorities raising particular concern about a rapidly growing form of exploitation: trafficking to commit cyber-enabled fraud and online scams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On this\u00a0<strong>World Day Against Trafficking in Persons<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime<\/strong>\u00a0(UNODC) and the\u00a0<strong>European Union<\/strong>\u00a0(EU) call for urgent and coordinated international action to tackle\u00a0this form of trafficking and ensure victims receive the protection they need.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/human-trafficking-cards_in-focus.png\" width=\"495\" height=\"279\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Criminal groups recruit people through\u00a0deceptive job advertisements and false promises of legitimate employment, only to exploit them in scam centres. They use digital and artificial intelligence-facilitated technologies to expand their operations and evade detection, while victims remain largely hidden from public view and are often treated as offenders rather than victims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The global scale of the problem is becoming increasingly clear.\u00a0By late 2025,\u00a0<span class=\"ecl-link__label\">victims identified<\/span>\u00a0came from nearly 80 nationalities. While Southeast Asia remains a major hub, the model is spreading to the Middle East, Africa, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, South Asia the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean. No region is immune.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to United Nations estimates,\u00a0<span class=\"ecl-link__label\">more than 300,000 people<\/span>\u00a0in Southeast Asia\u00a0are currently being forced to conduct cybercrime including online\u00a0scams operations, often working under harsh and abusive conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These scam centres are run by highly organised transnational criminal networks. UNODC estimates that\u00a0cyber scams generated between $18 billion and $37 billion in illicit profits in 2023 in that region alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the coming months, the European Commission will present an EU Action Plan to combat digital fraud and a new EU Strategy on combating Trafficking in Human Beings which will address these issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Together, UNODC and the EU support countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America by training investigators, prosecutors and other criminal justice professionals to dismantle criminal networks, identify victims and ensure they can access justice and support services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For more information: <a href=\"https:\/\/home-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/news\/unodc-and-eu-warn-rising-human-trafficking-criminal-activities-scam-centres-2026-07-30_en\">European Commission<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Human trafficking for forced criminality is increasing across the world, with authorities raising particular concern about a rapidly growing form of exploitation: trafficking to commit cyber-enabled fraud and online scams.
