Who is exempt?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Entry\/Exit System (EES) <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">has been <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">fully operational <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">at <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">all external border crossing points within the Schengen area <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">since <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">10 April 2026.<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0Designed to modernise border management and enhance the EU\u2019s security, the system has recorded more than 145 million entries and exits since its launch.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-ketut-subiyanto-4881129-scaled.jpg\" width=\"705\" height=\"470\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The EES applies to non-EU nationals travelling to the Schengen Area for a short stay and records data from their travel documents, biometric data (fingerprints and facial image) and data on their entry and exit. Nationals of EU countries, as well as those of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, are not recorded in the EES.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Whilst the EES will record millions of travellers from outside the EU, certain categories are not recorded in the system. Border checks for travellers in these categories remain as usual: they must present their identity card or passport together with their long-stay visa or residence permit. Fingerprints and facial scans are not required.
