{"id":170524,"date":"2026-07-27T03:00:03","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T01:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=170524"},"modified":"2026-07-24T10:27:58","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:27:58","slug":"the-commission-approves-advance-payments-for-malta-portugal-and-spain-under-the-eusf-to-help-them-recover-from-the-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-commission-approves-advance-payments-for-malta-portugal-and-spain-under-the-eusf-to-help-them-recover-from-the-storms\/","title":{"rendered":"The Commission approves advance payments for Malta, Portugal and Spain under the EUSF to help them recover from the storms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Commission has approved advance payments totalling 103.6 million euros for Malta, Portugal and Spain under the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF), with the aim of alleviating the financial burden of reconstruction efforts following the damage caused by the devastating storms that struck these countries in January and February 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/inundaciones-scaled-e1784881420582.jpg\" width=\"507\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The advance payments have been granted following applications for assistance from the EUSF submitted by Malta, Portugal and Spain, and following the Commission\u2019s positive technical assessment, which confirms that the criteria for accessing the Fund have been met.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between 19 and 21 January 2026, Malta was hit by Storm Harry. The storm caused widespread flooding, coastal damage and transport disruption, with significant repercussions for public infrastructure, ports, fisheries, aquaculture, agricultural assets and local communities. Malta will receive an advance of \u20ac931,014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between 22 January and 15 February 2026, Portugal was hit by a series of exceptionally severe storms. The storms brought strong winds, high coastal swells and torrential rain, causing flooding and landslides, resulting in 18 fatalities, significant material damage and disruptions to the provision of essential services. Portugal will receive an advance payment of \u20ac65.37 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between 22 January and 14 February 2026, Spain was affected by the same storms as Portugal. This resulted in prolonged power, water and telecommunications outages affecting thousands of residents. The population also suffered significant material losses, and many homes were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. Spain will receive an advance payment of 37.26 million euros.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Commission will submit a proposal to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU regarding the three applications.
