{"id":170191,"date":"2026-07-15T09:27:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T07:27:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=170191"},"modified":"2026-07-15T09:33:58","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T07:33:58","slug":"la-comision-y-el-reino-unido-firman-el-acuerdo-ue-reino-unido-con-respecto-a-gibraltar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/la-comision-y-el-reino-unido-firman-el-acuerdo-ue-reino-unido-con-respecto-a-gibraltar\/","title":{"rendered":"The Commission and the United Kingdom sign the EU\u2013UK Agreement on Gibraltar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ecl-content-block__description\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The European Commission and the United Kingdom have signed on July 14th the EU\u2013UK Agreement on Gibraltar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/istockphoto-1352120246-612x612-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This Agreement, which will enter into force provisionally on 15 July 2026, is the result of more than four years of negotiations and completes the legal framework for relations between the EU and the UK following the UK\u2019s withdrawal from the EU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Gibraltar is not covered by the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, which was signed in 2020 and has been in force since 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The main objective of this Agreement is to ensure the future prosperity of the entire region. It will provide confidence and legal certainty for the lives and well-being of people across the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It will promote shared prosperity and closer, more constructive relations between Gibraltar and the Spanish authorities, whilst fully safeguarding the Schengen area, the EU\u2019s single market and its customs union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Following the Council\u2019s adoption on 1 July of the proposal for the signing and provisional application of the EU\u2013UK Agreement, the Agreement was submitted to the European Parliament for approval, in accordance with the EU Treaties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Once Parliament\u2019s approval has been obtained, the Council may proceed to adopt its decision on the conclusion of the Agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Following a political agreement on the key principles of the Agreement between the EU and the UK in June 2025 between Commissioner Maro\u0161<strong>\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/strong>and the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares, together with the UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Lammy, and the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Picardo, the Commission adopted its proposals on the signing, provisional application and conclusion of the Agreement between the EU and the UK regarding Gibraltar in February this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p lang=\"es\"><strong>Quote(s)<\/strong><\/p>\n<section class=\"ecpr-section\">\n<p class=\"ecl-blockquote__citation\" lang=\"es\" style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 80px;\"><em>\u201cToday marks a truly historic moment.
