Given the growing reliance on these platforms, the public believes that greater protection and more robust measures are needed to combat disinformation. Furthermore, in light of global challenges, Europeans are calling for greater democratic participation, stronger defence capabilities and a transition to clean energy. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-ron-lach-9785028-scaled.jpg\" width=\"543\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Cyberbullying tops the list of perceived risks faced by children online.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">A large majority of Europeans want the EU to do more to protect children from online risks. Europeans are extremely concerned about all the risks children face on social media. Cyberbullying and harassment top the list of concerns, worrying 71 per cent of respondents, closely followed by fears of sexual harassment and online sexual exploitation (70 per cent), exposure to harmful content such as violence, self-harm or extremism (69 per cent) and the misuse of children\u2019s personal data (69 per cent). A significant majority also highlight the risk of children being recruited into illegal activities (64 per cent) and being exposed to platforms with addictive designs (60 per cent).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">A large majority of Europeans want the EU to do more to protect children from online risks. Almost two in three Europeans (63%) want EU rules to restrict children\u2019s access to social media based on age, either through a total ban below a certain age threshold (36%) or delayed access (27%). Fifteen per cent are in favour of strengthening law enforcement resources, whilst 13 per cent prefer supervision to remain in the hands of parents and schools, without further EU intervention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Two-thirds of Europeans (66%) use social media daily to keep up to date with current affairs or politics. In this context, Europeans cite stricter penalties for illegal online content (44%) and stricter regulations for platforms (40%) as the top priorities for combating disinformation or false information, followed by clear labelling of content generated or manipulated by AI (38 per cent), a minimum age for accessing social media (37 per cent) and greater investment in media literacy and independent fact-checking (29 per cent).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Freedom of expression, fair elections and the rule of law are regarded as the fundamental pillars of democracy.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Europeans also feel strongly attached to the key elements of democracy. Freedom of expression (34 per cent), free and fair elections (32 per cent) and respect for the rule of law and fundamental rights (31 per cent) top the list of the most important elements of a democratic society for Europeans, according to the results of the new survey. The fight against corruption (28 per cent), transparency and accountability of political leaders, together with an independent judiciary (26 per cent), and citizens\u2019 participation in public debate and decision-making (22 per cent) are also cited as key pillars. Beyond voting, Europeans consider more direct forms of participation to be an effective way of influencing EU decision-making (46%), followed by involvement in political movements, parties or trade unions (42%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Confidence in the EU\u2019s defence capabilities is on the rise.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">A large majority of Europeans (68%) agree that the EU should strengthen its capacity to defend itself autonomously against potential external threats. 56 per cent (up 4 percentage points since January 2026) say they are confident that the EU will strengthen security and defence and better protect its citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Renewable energy and energy efficiency are seen as key to easing the pressure on energy prices.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The survey also revealed that more than half of respondents (56%) believe that developing greater renewable energy capacity can help the EU move away from fossil fuels, whilst two in five point to energy efficiency measures. Thirty-two per cent also see nuclear energy as a possible solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">As for the specific measures taken by citizens following the rise in energy prices, nearly one in three respondents (31%) have reduced their total electricity consumption, whilst more than one in four (27%) have started to monitor their energy consumption more closely or have reduced their use of heating or cooling (26%). The list of measures is rounded off by adjusting energy consumption to different times of the day to take advantage of lower prices (20%), investing in more energy-efficient household appliances (16%), comparing or switching energy suppliers or contracts (14%) and installing or considering the installation of renewable energy solutions (14%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Background<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Flash Eurobarometer 584 on the EU\u2019s challenges and priorities (June 2026) was conducted online from 19 to 24 June 2026.
