In the EU, desertification already affects\u00a0<strong>13 countries<\/strong>, and soil degradation is estimated to cost around\u00a0<strong>\u20ac50 billion per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0Water Resilience Strategy\u00a0is the EU\u2019s response to this\u00a0<strong>global water crisis\u00a0<\/strong>driven by overuse, poor management, climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year&#8217;s World Drought and Desertification Day shines a spotlight on\u00a0<strong>rangelands, which are natural spaces used for grazing cattle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The goal is to\u00a0recognise and draw attention to their economic, ecological and cultural value, to support their traditional stewards, and push for their restoration. This aligns with the\u202f<span class=\"ecl-link__label\">International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists<\/span>\u00a0to give rangelands the value they deserve as an\u202fecosystem.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/desertificacion-2-scaled.jpg\" width=\"491\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Looking ahead to UNCCD COP17<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU will work with international partners\u202fto deliver on global commitments to tackle desertification, land degradation, and drought at this year\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"ecl-link__label\">United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17),\u00a0<\/span>taking place in August in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ahead of UNCCD COP 17, a multistakeholder dialogue<strong>\u00a0&#8216;<\/strong><em><strong>Restoring Land, Restoring Hope: Road to UNCCD COP17<\/strong><\/em><strong>&#8216;\u00a0<\/strong>took place on<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>5 May in Brussels. \u00a0The European Commission, the Government of Mongolia, and the United Nations co-hosted the event. Throughout discussions, the need to\u00a0<strong>mobilise finance<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 public and private \u2014 figured prominently.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Given their key role in land management, the full and effective participation of women and girls and gender equality are essential for effective implementation on the ground.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Similarly, the active participation of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) is important for meaningful outcomes of the UNCCD processes and their subsequent implementation.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>supports the<strong>\u00a0involvement of CSOs\u00a0<\/strong>in UNCCD processes and the\u00a0<strong>meaningful participation of women in the UNCCD,<\/strong>\u00a0including supporting, jointly with the Government of Mongolia, a preparatory meeting for CSOs and a year-long Women Negotiators Training for 20 women from developing countries, together with other initiatives, such as the\u00a0<span class=\"ecl-link__label\">UNCCD\u2019s Women Delegates Fund<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In her political guidelines for 2024-2029, President von der Leyen announced the development of an EU Water Resilience Strategy to ensure sources are properly managed, that scarcity is addressed and that we enhance the competitive, innovative edge of our water industry while taking a circular economy approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Global freshwater demand is predicted to exceed supply by a staggering\u00a0<strong>40% by 2030<\/strong>.
