The EU funding will help to ensure safe, clean, healthy and sustainably managed oceans worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/pexels-stephanlouis-5313383-1-scaled.jpg\" width=\"659\" height=\"412\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">This year\u2019s conference, held under the theme<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">\u2018Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future\u2019,<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">brings together representatives from governments, civil society and industry from around the world to support the heritage, cultures and coastal communities shaped by the sea, whilst calling for a shared commitment to ensuring a resilient, fair and prosperous ocean for future generations. The theme is in line with the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">Strategy for Coastal Communities<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, recently adopted by the European Commission, which seeks to balance environmental protection with economic and social sustainability in coastal regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">EU funding is designed to improve the sustainability of the oceans and maritime safety globally through a series of specific initiatives. These include strengthening the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">Global Ocean Observing System<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">and improving data-driven decision-making for marine policies through the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">Commission\u2019s<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">OceanEye<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">initiative<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">; boosting maritime security by combating piracy and unsafe navigation in the southern Red Sea, the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden; and fostering a sustainable coastal and ocean economy in Africa through partnerships between investors and entrepreneurs and the scaling up of high-impact projects under<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">BlueInvest Africa<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Additional EU-funded measures will combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; support the implementation of the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">Political Declaration of the United Nations Ocean Conference<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">; and promote the sustainable management of coastal and marine resources. The EU funding announced today will also tackle marine pollution \u2014 by reducing plastics, chemicals and nutrient runoff, whilst restoring vulnerable ecosystems \u2014 as well as expanding marine protected areas, deepening scientific understanding of deep-sea biodiversity and strengthening global conservation targets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fund<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The ocean covers 70.8% of the Earth\u2019s surface and plays a vital role in regulating the climate, maintaining biodiversity and sustaining communities. However, it faces enormous pressures from global warming, overfishing and habitat destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The EU has consistently prioritised the protection of the oceans through policies such as the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">European Pact for the Oceans<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">and international cooperation. The Our Ocean Conference, launched in 2014, brings together governments, civil society and industry to find joint solutions and set out ambitious commitments to protect the oceans.
