The Code is voluntary and sets out practical steps to help\u00a0<strong>providers\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>deployers\u00a0<\/strong>of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems meet the\u00a0<strong>AI Act<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>transparency obligations that will apply from 2 August 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/artificial-intelligence-3382507_640.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From that date, the AI Act will require clear labelling in key cases.\u00a0<strong>D<\/strong><strong>eepfakes\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>AI-generated or AI-manipulated text published on matters of public interest<\/strong>\u00a0must be clearly labelled. Users must also be informed when they are interacting with an\u00a0<strong>interactive AI system<\/strong>, such as a chatbot. These transparency requirements help people recognise when content has been generated or altered by AI, reducing the risk of deception and manipulation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Code was drafted by\u00a0<strong>six independent experts<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>with input from over\u00a0<strong>180 stakeholders<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Contributors included providers and deployers of interactive and generative AI systems and models, associations representing deployers, small and medium-sized enterprises, academia, the public sector and civil society organisations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Code consists of two sections:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Providers<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This section focuses on obligations for providers of generative AI systems. It sets out how to ensure that AI-generated or AI-manipulated audio, images, video or text are marked in a\u00a0<strong>machine-readable<\/strong>\u00a0way and can be detected as artificially generated or manipulated.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deployers<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This section details obligations for deployers of generative AI systems. It explains how they must clearly label deepfakes and AI-generated or AI-manipulated text published to inform the public on matters of public interest when there has been n<strong>o human review or editorial control<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These transparency rules complement the AI Act rules on\u00a0<strong>general-purpose AI models<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>high-risk systems<\/strong>, supporting responsible development and use of AI in the EU.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next steps<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Code is now open for signatures. The Commission invites all providers and deployers to sign. Once the Commission and AI Board approve the Code as adequate, providers and deployers who sign will be able to demonstrate compliance with the relevant AI Act obligations that start to apply on 2 August 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Code will be complemented by Commission guidelines.
