According to the central message<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">of<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">EU Green Week 2026,<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">the answer starts with nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/foto-eurodesk.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The EU\u2019s most important annual conference on the environment begins today (3 June) in Brussels, bringing together policymakers, business leaders, environmentalists, investors, scientists, farmers, innovators and civil society to explore how investing in nature can strengthen Europe\u2019s economy, security and long-term prosperity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Organised by the European Commission, this year\u2019s Green Week focuses on building <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">a \u2018nature-positive <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">economy\u2019, recognising that healthy ecosystems are not a luxury but essential infrastructure that underpins food production, water security, climate resilience, public health and economic stability. When these systems weaken, the economy suffers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">From environmental issues to economic strategy<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The conference comes at a crucial time for Europe. Biodiversity loss, water stress and ecosystem degradation<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">are increasingly recognised<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">not only as environmental challenges, but also as<\/span><span class=\"ecl-link__label\"><span dir=\"auto\">economic<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"auto\">and<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">security<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">risks<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">. Up to two-thirds of European economic activity depends on the services provided by nature: from fertile soils and pollination to drinking water, flood protection and stable supply chains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The conference also coincides with the publication<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">of the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">latest<\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> Eurobarometer report on biodiversity<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, which shows strong public support among Europeans for protecting nature and combating biodiversity loss. This underlines the growing awareness that healthy ecosystems are essential for both environmental and economic resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Over two days, speakers and participants will explore how ecosystem restoration can help Europe become more resilient and competitive, whilst supporting innovation, investment and local jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The discussions will focus on:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Regenerative and profitable farming models<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Financing instruments, such as nature credits and biodiversity investment frameworks<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Large-scale nature restoration<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Soil regeneration<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Greening of cities<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Tackling rural decline through nature-based development<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span dir=\"auto\">And how businesses are integrating nature into their economic strategy and risk management<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Connecting innovators with investors<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">One of this year\u2019s highlights is <\/span><span dir=\"auto\"> Re:Invest in Nature<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, the first initiative of its kind organised by the European Commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">It brings together 70 start-ups and entrepreneurs developing nature-based technology and business models with potential investors, including global companies such as JP Morgan and Rabobank.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span dir=\"auto\">\u201cThis year, Green Week focuses on a simple but powerful truth: healthy ecosystems are the foundation of resilient and competitive economies.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span dir=\"auto\">When we invest in them, we are not prioritising nature over growth; we are choosing the kind of growth that endures. Our task over the next two days \u2014 and in the months and years to come \u2014 is to turn that understanding into concrete action.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Jessika Roswall, Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Dialogue on youth policy, LIFE awards and global engagement.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Green Week extends far beyond the conference venue in Brussels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Throughout June, hundreds of events organised by partners will take place across Europe, as well as in Turkey, China and the United States. These include guided bike rides through bird sanctuaries, TED talks on investing in biodiversity, workshops, public debates, seminars and exhibitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">A key highlight of the week will be the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">Youth Policy Dialogue<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, where young people from across Europe will engage in a direct exchange with Commissioner Roswall on their expectations for Europe\u2019s environmental future, intergenerational equity and the transition to a resilient economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The programme also includes the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">annual<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">LIFE Awards<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, which recognise some of the EU\u2019s most innovative and high-impact environmental and climate projects funded by the LIFE Programme. These awards highlight successful initiatives that contribute to the restoration of ecosystems, the protection of biodiversity, the reduction of pollution and the acceleration of Europe\u2019s green transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">During the conference, the winner of<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">the #ForOurPlanet award<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">will also be announced<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">. This award, organised by the European Commission and the European External Action Service in collaboration with the European Training Foundation\u2019s Green Skills Award, recognises inspiring initiatives that contribute to the restoration and conservation of nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The conference will conclude with a screening of the documentary<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">Becoming Nature Positive<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">, followed by a discussion with <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Marco Lambertini<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, former Director General of WWF International and coordinator of the Nature Positive Initiative.<\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Background<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The protection and restoration of nature are a cornerstone of the EU\u2019s environmental and economic agenda. Through the<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">European Commission\u2019s <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">Biodiversity Strategy to 2030<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">and the implementation of<\/span><span class=\"ecl-link__label\"><span dir=\"auto\">the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, the EU has committed to halting and reversing biodiversity loss within this decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Recent EU measures include the adoption of<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">the Nature Restoration Regulation<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, more ambitious biodiversity targets, initiatives on<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">soil<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">and water<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">resilience<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, and efforts to promote a clean, competitive and resilient bioeconomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">In addition to regulation, the EU is increasingly focusing on mobilising investment for nature. Public funding alone will not be sufficient to close the biodiversity financing gap, so the EU is working to create enabling conditions for private investment through<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">sustainable finance frameworks<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">,<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">nature credit<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">pilot projects<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">and<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">support for innovative business models.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The aim is to accelerate the transition to a nature-positive economy, in which sustainable economic growth, competitiveness and resilience are reinforced by healthy ecosystems, rather than achieved at their expense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>More information: <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/news\/eu-green-week-2026-opens-focus-nature-investment-2026-06-03_en\">European Commission.\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How can Europe remain competitive, resilient and secure in an increasingly unstable world?
