{"id":167416,"date":"2026-04-20T09:25:03","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T07:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=167416"},"modified":"2026-04-20T09:25:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T07:25:03","slug":"founding-treaty-of-eus-predecessor-turns-75","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/founding-treaty-of-eus-predecessor-turns-75\/","title":{"rendered":"Founding treaty of EU\u2019s predecessor turns 75"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On April 18 it was celebrated 75 years since the signing of the Treaty of Paris establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the first Treaty that led to the creation of the European Union.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Signature-of-the-Treaty-of-Paris-2nd-one.jpg\" width=\"508\" height=\"353\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Signed by Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, it paved the way for deepening European economic integration and the establishment of the European Economic Community with the 1957 Treaty of Rome and the European Union with the 1992 Treaty of Maastricht.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">French Minister for Foreign Affairs Robert Schuman put forward the idea of a coal and steel community in his now famous\u00a0<u>\u2018Schuman Declaration<\/u>\u2019 on 9 May 1950. Following the devastating effects of the second world war, he asserted: \u201csolidarity in production thus established will make it plain that any war between France and Germany becomes not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A year later the ECSC was launched. The Community\u2019s primary aim was to organise the free movement of coal and steel, free up access to sources of production and ensure price transparency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At that time, the choice of coal and steel was highly symbolic: in the early\u202f1950s, coal and steel were vital industries. In addition to the economic benefits, the pooling of French and German resources was intended to mark the end of the rivalry between the two countries. The common coal and steel market was to be an experiment which could gradually be extended to other economic spheres, culminating in a political Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This Treaty also laid the foundations of many of the EU\u2019s modern-day institutions by setting up an executive known as the \u2018High Authority\u2019, the predecessor of today\u2019s European Commission, a Parliamentary Assembly, a Council of Ministers, a Court of Justice and a Consultative Committee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For more information: <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/news-and-media\/news\/founding-treaty-eus-predecessor-turns-75-2026-04-17_en?prefLang=es\">European Commission<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On April 18 it was celebrated 75 years since the signing of the Treaty of Paris establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the first Treaty that led to the creation of the European Union.
