{"id":167393,"date":"2026-04-20T03:00:51","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T01:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=167393"},"modified":"2026-04-17T10:08:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T08:08:53","slug":"mejor-proteccion-para-los-trabajadores-frente-a-su-exposicion-a-sustancias-quimicas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/mejor-proteccion-para-los-trabajadores-frente-a-su-exposicion-a-sustancias-quimicas\/","title":{"rendered":"Better protection for workers against exposure to chemicals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" data-view1200=\"6\" data-view1020=\"6\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text ep-layout_chapo\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">On Wednesday, the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs adopted its position on the new provisions designed to strengthen EU rules to protect workers from exposure to hazardous substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pexels-jiri-ikonomidis-164966727-15509863-scaled.jpg\" width=\"562\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" data-view1200=\"6\" data-view1020=\"6\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text\" data-wysiwyg=\"\">\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">With 45 votes in favour, none against and 10 abstentions, MEPs on the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs approved the sixth revision of the Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic Substances Directive (<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">CMRD<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">), which includes new exposure limit values for certain hazardous chemicals, based on the latest scientific data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">New exposure limit values<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">MEPs backed new limit values for cobalt and its inorganic compounds, used in battery production; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, used in steel, iron and aluminium production; and 1,4-dioxane, used in chemical and textile production. They also supported the inclusion of welding fumes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Isoprene<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">MEPs included a long-term occupational exposure limit for isoprene (used in the chemical and rubber manufacturing industries), which they say meets the criteria for classification as a carcinogen. Exposure to isoprene can cause irritation to the nose, throat and lungs, and chronic, high-level exposure can lead to liver cancer and anaemia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Use of protective equipment<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">To improve worker protection, the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs added an obligation for employers to provide personal protective equipment, such as respiratory protection devices, where residual exposure cannot be reduced to levels below the limit values, which must be adjusted to the worker\u2019s body type. When using such equipment, workers must be entitled to regular breaks in uncontaminated areas, say MEPs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Firefighters<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">MEPs also want additional protective measures for firefighters and emergency service personnel, who risk coming into contact with a variety of hazardous materials during their work. The report highlights the need for specific risk assessments, appropriate protective measures and targeted medical surveillance for firefighters and emergency service personnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Support for small and<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the implementation of the directive, MEPs want Member States to monitor and report on the effects of the legislation\u2019s implementation on SMEs, including specific measures such as financial and technical support.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Gender dimension<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Given that workers may be more vulnerable to different types of substances depending on their gender, the committee wants gender mainstreaming to become an integral part of the development of all occupational safety and health policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Quote<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">from rapporteur<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">Liesbet Sommen<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">(EPP, BE):<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">\u201cIn the EU, around 120,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed in workers every year following exposure to carcinogens in the workplace. We cannot accept this; no one should fall ill simply for going to work. The new exposure limits we are proposing will ensure better protection for thousands of workers across the EU. We are working to improve worker protection, reduce health risks and support decent working conditions.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span dir=\"auto\">Next steps<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span dir=\"auto\">The negotiating mandate still needs to be approved in plenary before negotiations with the Council on the final form of the legislation can begin.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span dir=\"auto\">Background<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The sixth revision of the Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic Substances Directive should improve the protection of workers against occupational diseases and reduce health risks to workers.
