{"id":166628,"date":"2026-03-19T03:00:38","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T02:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=166628"},"modified":"2026-03-18T14:39:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T13:39:10","slug":"bioeconomia-el-consejo-apoya-que-las-innovaciones-de-base-biologica-se-lleven-del-laboratorio-a-la-produccion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/bioeconomia-el-consejo-apoya-que-las-innovaciones-de-base-biologica-se-lleven-del-laboratorio-a-la-produccion\/","title":{"rendered":"The Council supports the move to take bio-based innovations from the laboratory to production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Council adopted last March 17 conclusions on the EU\u2019s new Bioeconomy Strategy, which welcome the vision of a <strong>competitive and sustainable bioeconomy by 2040<\/strong>, promote the use of circular and bio-based solutions across all relevant sectors\u2014as non-fossil alternatives\u2014and support innovation and investment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bioeconomy uses renewable biological resources, such as plants, animals and microorganisms, to produce food, energy and industrial goods.<\/p>\n<section id=\"\" class=\"gsc-main-section \">\n<div class=\"gsc-container gsc-bge-grid\">\n<div class=\"gsc-bge-grid__area\" data-layout=\"8\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In its Conclusions, the Council welcomes the EU Bioeconomy Strategy proposed by the Commission as a <strong>timely and essential step<\/strong>towards strengthening Europe\u2019s c<strong>ompetitiveness<\/strong>, resilience, prosperity and <strong>sustainability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Council\u2019s Conclusions, it is important <strong>to effectively implement <\/strong>existing EU legislation relevant to the bioeconomy and to align national actions with the strategy. The Council calls for greater <strong>innovation <\/strong>and further measures to encourage <strong>investment <\/strong>in sustainable bio-based solutions, in particular the streamlining of approval procedures and the simplification of regulations, and for taking the lead in global action on the bioeconomy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/4_Boosting-productivity-with-digital-tech-diffusion.jpg\" width=\"558\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Creating <strong>predictable demand <\/strong>for bio-based materials and technologies is key to unlocking private investment. In this context, the Council highlights the need to identify and strengthen sectors with high potential (pioneer markets).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These lead markets should not be limited to those listed in the EU Bioeconomy Strategy (e.g. bio-based plastics, chemicals, construction materials and fertilisers), but could also <strong>be extended to other sectors<\/strong>, such as footwear and textiles, paper or the blue bioeconomy (e.g. the use of algae and sponges).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to recent reports, the EU is largely self-sufficient in terms of biomass supply (around 90%). The Council calls for a <strong>sustainable supply of biomass<\/strong> to be ensured, as this is essential for the long-term viability of the bioeconomy. It calls on Member States to use biomass across all value chains <strong>in a resource-efficient and environmentally sound manner<\/strong>, and to promote the use of by-products, bio-waste and waste (secondary biomass).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"\" class=\"gsc-main-section \">\n<div class=\"gsc-container gsc-bge-grid\">\n<div class=\"gsc-bge-grid__area\" data-layout=\"8\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Background<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Across the EU, the bioeconomy supports almost one in twelve jobs, representing a workforce of 17.1 million people.
