Founded in 2010, this organisation brings together some <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">70 producers and 59 vessels from the ports of Conil, La Atunara and Rota<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">. As a producer organisation officially recognised by EU legislation, <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">OPP72 benefits from EU support<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, particularly through production and marketing plans, to protect both their livelihoods and marine resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/sticker-mule-qNhstTawQrI-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"manos sujetan pescado\" width=\"584\" height=\"389\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">OPP72 gives small-scale fishermen a collective voice and presence in national and EU-level debates, where they are often under-represented compared to larger fleets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Science-based sustainability<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Science and local expertise are central to OPP72&#8217;s approach. Initially, many local species were not well studied, and scientists classified them as &#8216;stocks with limited data&#8217;. If you don&#8217;t know the status of your resource, how can you manage it sustainably?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">To address this problem, OPP72 took the <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">initiative to conduct its own research on fish stocks <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">and surrounding ecosystems. The results formed the basis for action plans aimed at improving the sustainability and management of the local marine environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">From the ocean to the plate: enhancing the value of local fisheries<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">To bring consumers closer to the origin of their seafood, OPP72 launched a certification programme called &#8220;<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">Pescado de Conil<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">&#8221; (Fish from Conil). <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Each fish caught by its members receives a yellow label with a QR code <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">that provides information about the species, the boat that caught it, the fishing area and even recipe ideas. This transparency builds trust and rewards local, sustainable fishing practices. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The organisation is currently working on an <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">innovative traceability system for locally harvested clams<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, which uses laser technology to engrave a unique code on each clam. This is a pioneering initiative that is generating a lot of interest in the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">In addition, OPP72 developed a digital auction platform to modernise sales, enabling fishermen to reach more buyers and secure fair prices. They also launched an <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">online shop<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, allowing consumers to order fresh, local seafood directly from their homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Raising awareness and inspiring the next generation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Education and awareness are fundamental pillars of OPP72&#8217;s work. They organise <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">annual campaigns with local restaurants<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, highlighting a different species each year. They also collaborate with schools through initiatives such as<\/span><span class=\"ecl-link__label\"><span dir=\"auto\">Chef Marinero<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, a <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">cooking competition for children<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, and distribute educational materials, including a documentary featuring\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">&#8216;SuperMar&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, an animated seahorse that helps children learn about marine life and fishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">These efforts promote responsible consumption and support generational renewal within the fishing industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A commitment to the environment\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Environmental protection is central to OPP72&#8217;s mission. One notable initiative is its <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">local coral restoration project<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, where corals accidentally caught during fishing are carefully restored to health and then returned to the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">This highlights OPP72&#8217;s belief that <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">sustainability and productivity go hand in hand<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, with the fishermen themselves being the most committed guardians of the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Making a difference with EU support<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">OPP72&#8217;s work demonstrates what artisanal fishers can achieve when they organise themselves and receive adequate support. With the help of the European Union, they have been able to <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">invest in marketing, innovation and community outreach<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">The producer organisation is driving hope for a coastal fishery in need of institutional support<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"auto\">,&#8221; says Nicol\u00e1s Fern\u00e1ndez Mu\u00f1oz, director of the PO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">OPP72 is creating new avenues for sustainable fishing, stronger markets and a closer connection between producers, consumers and the environment.
