This PhD project asks a fundamental question of global relevance:<\/span><em><span dir=\"auto\">how does the structure of glycans control carbon sequestration in marine systems?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">By combining <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">organic synthesis <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">and <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">chemical biology<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, the project aims to uncover the molecular characteristics of marine polysaccharides that underpin this process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Project description:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span dir=\"auto\">Marine algae produce complex polysaccharides (glycans) that play a little-known but potentially crucial role in long-term carbon sequestration. This PhD project will use chemical synthesis and chemical biology to decipher the molecular structures responsible for these properties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span dir=\"auto\">This project will combine <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">organic synthesis and chemical biology <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">to:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span dir=\"auto\">Synthesise defined oligosaccharides and chemical probes through organic synthesis.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span dir=\"auto\">Use chemical probes to investigate the carbon cycle of glycans in marine microbiomes.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span dir=\"auto\">Explore the potential biological and medical properties of algal glycans..<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span dir=\"auto\">Working at the interface between organic synthesis and biological chemistry, the successful candidate will investigate how specific glycans sequester carbon.
