{"id":165363,"date":"2026-02-09T03:00:31","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T02:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=165363"},"modified":"2026-02-06T10:21:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T09:21:27","slug":"una-nueva-capa-la-etiqueta-ecologica-de-la-ue-sube-de-nivel-para-pinturas-y-barnices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/una-nueva-capa-la-etiqueta-ecologica-de-la-ue-sube-de-nivel-para-pinturas-y-barnices\/","title":{"rendered":"A new layer: the EU Ecolabel moves up a level for paints and varnishes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">BRUSSELS \u2013 In response to rapid developments in the coatings market, the European Commission has presented an updated set of<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">EU Ecolabel criteria for paints and varnishes.<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">These criteria bring one of the programme&#8217;s key product groups up to date with the latest technological advances and market trends, including revised requirements for the most environmentally friendly paints and varnishes on the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/art-close-up-ecology-886521-e1574752001531.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Greater safeguards for health and the environment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The revised criteria promote sustainability by addressing the entire life cycle of paints and varnishes. This reduces environmental impact while protecting health. In particular, the criteria introduce:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">lower limits for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) to reduce emissions during application;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">strict thresholds for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), addressing long-term indoor exposure and contributing to improved indoor air quality;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">revised fitness-for-use criteria to ensure alignment with industry practices aimed at accurately accounting for best-performing products;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">updated preservation limits, balancing product performance and durability with enhanced environmental protection.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">Another new feature is that the criteria encourage the efficient use of products and provide guidance on the management of unused paints and coatings, supporting the transition to a more circular and competitive economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A clearer structure for a more diverse market\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">For greater clarity for applicants, the original product group has been divided into two distinct groups: <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">&#8216;decorative paints, varnishes and related products&#8217; <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">and <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">&#8216;high-performance coatings and related products&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">, each with specific criteria reflecting their functions and patterns of use. In addition, a third product group, <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">&#8216;water-based spray paints&#8217;, <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">has been introduced<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, recognising a growing market segment with considerable potential for improving environmental performance. This better reflects the current coatings market and allows the EU Ecolabel to capture the best available techniques and future avenues for innovation for the different product categories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">The new requirements will be valid until <\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">31 December 2032<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">To help stakeholders adapt to the changes, the European Commission (Joint Research Centre-JRC and Directorate-General for Environment) is organising a<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">mandatory webinar on 19 February 2026.<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">The event will serve as a technical presentation on the new criteria and revised requirements and the EU Ecolabel application process. It will also provide an opportunity to highlight how the EU Ecolabel promotes competitiveness and innovation, and to remind businesses how they can use the EU Ecolabel logo in their marketing and product promotion activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Why it matters to industry and consumers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"auto\">For manufacturers, brand owners and private label retailers, the EU Ecolabel remains a recognised and science-based tool for demonstrating environmental excellence, market differentiation and competitiveness.
