The latest Eurobarometer shows that nearly three quarters of EU citizens consider that their country has benefited from EU membership. Support for the euro, as well as for common defence and security, is among the highest ever recorded. In a contested geopolitical environment, Europeans increasingly call for a stronger and more assertive EU with reinforced economic independence and a common defence and security policy.<\/p>\n

Europeans see benefits from the EU membership<\/strong><\/p>\n

74% of Europeans say that their\u00a0country has benefited from being a member of the EU<\/strong>. Almost six in ten EU citizens (59%) are also\u00a0optimistic about the future of the EU<\/strong>\u00a0and nearly three quarters of respondents (73%) say they\u00a0feel they are citizens of the EU.\u00a0<\/strong>Trust in the EU remains at a high level with 48% saying they trust the EU.<\/p>\n

Europeans wish for a stronger and more assertive EU<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two thirds of respondents (67%) agree that\u00a0t<\/strong>he European Union\u00a0<\/strong>is\u00a0a place of stability<\/strong>\u00a0in a troubled world. Support for strengthening the EU’s economic independence is overwhelming: 83% believe the Union should diversify trade relations globally.<\/p>\n

Nearly eight in ten Europeans (79%) are in favour of a\u00a0common defence and security policy<\/strong>\u00a0among Member States \u2013 the\u00a0second<\/strong>\u00a0highest result<\/strong>\u00a0since 2004.\u00a0Ensuring peace and stability<\/strong>\u00a0remains by some distance the action that will have the highest positive impact on European citizens’ life in the short term (selected by 42%), followed by the creation of more\u00a0job opportunities<\/strong>\u00a0(26%),\u00a0securing food, health, and industry supplies in the EU<\/strong>\u00a0(25%) and\u00a0managing irregular migration<\/strong>\u00a0(24%).<\/p>\n

In terms of EU budget priorities, citizens would like the\u00a0EU budget<\/strong>\u00a0to be spent on\u00a0employment, social affairs and public health<\/strong>\u00a0(42%,),\u00a0education, training, youth, culture and media<\/strong>\u00a0(36%,) and\u00a0defence and security<\/strong>\u00a0(35%,).<\/p>\n

Europeans show record support for euro \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Eurobarometer survey registered\u00a0the highest support ever for the common currency<\/strong>\u00a0in the EU (74%) and the second highest support in the euro area (82%). When it comes to the perception of the situation of the European economy,\u00a046%\u00a0<\/strong>of Europeans find it\u00a0good\u00a0<\/strong>while\u00a046% find it bad<\/strong>. A majority of citizens (49%) think the European economic situation will remain stable in the next 12 months.<\/p>\n

Continued and stable support for the EU’s response to the war in Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the face of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, 81% of European respondents agree with\u00a0welcoming into the EU people fleeing the war<\/strong>, while over three quarters of Europeans (77%) support\u00a0providing financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine<\/strong>. 73% of EU citizens back\u00a0economic sanctions<\/strong>\u00a0on the Russian government, companies, and individuals while nearly six in ten (59%) approve of the EU granting\u00a0candidate status<\/strong>\u00a0to Ukraine and 57% agree with the EU financing the purchase and supply of\u00a0military equipment<\/strong>\u00a0to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine<\/strong>\u00a0remains the\u00a0most important issue facing the EU<\/strong>\u00a0(mentioned by 26%) followed by immigration (mentioned by 20%), the international situation (19%), as well as the security and defence (18%).\u00a077%<\/strong>\u00a0of European respondents agree that\u00a0Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a threat to the security of the EU<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Background<\/h3>\n

The Standard Eurobarometer 104 (autumn 2025) was conducted between 9 October and 5 November 2025 across the 27 Member States. Overall, 26,445 EU citizens were interviewed face-to-face. Interviews were also conducted in nine candidate and potential candidate countries (all except Ukraine) and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
