What is\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>information manipulation?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Information manipulation\u202fis a deliberate effort to\u00a0<\/span>mislead, create confusion and weaken trust in democracy and society, research and media. <\/strong><\/span>This can create or increase\u00a0<\/span>tensions and destabilise communities.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Six tips to\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>protect yourself<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0against manipulation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

1. Verify if the<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>source is credible:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Anonymous social media accounts should be viewed with caution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some actors even impersonate credible sources. So-called\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u2018<\/strong><\/span>doppelganger<\/strong><\/span>\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>operations use clones of legitimate websites to spread false claims.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watch out for unusual domain endings like\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>‘.ltd’, ‘.online’, or ‘.foo’.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>They might signal a deceptive website.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Check the source\u2019s <\/strong><\/span>track record:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

The best way to determine a source\u2019s credibility is to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>look at its history.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If it doesn\u2019t have a clear track record, try to learn more about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trustworthy sources are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>transparent about their team, mission and funding.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>If you cannot identify who is behind it, be cautious.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Consider the<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>tone\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>being used:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

One of the techniques to manipulate information is to use\u00a0<\/span>shocking or emotional language,<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to create enemies and assign blame.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a source consistently uses such a tone and looks for scapegoats without credible proof, it might be trying to mislead you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Information manipulation actors often<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018cherry-pick\u2019 facts or mix truth with lies<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to mislead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Extraordinary claims need strong evidence. Always verify with reputable sources.<\/span><\/p>\n

Checking credible news outlets or fact-checking websites can provide context and clarity.<\/span><\/p>\n
