The European Commission announces the\u00a0\u00a0twenty-seven winners\u00a0from the\u00a0\u00a018th edition of its translation competition for high school students (\u00a0<\/strong>Juvenes Translatores<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0)<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

3,070 participants enthusiastically took on the task of translating a text between two of the 24 official EU languages.<\/p>\n

Although English takes centre stage, the 144 language combinations chosen by students from 713 schools also included language pairs such as Polish-Portuguese, Slovenian-Danish and Portuguese-Finnish.<\/p>\n

Translators from the European Commission have selected\u00a0\u00a0one\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0winner\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0from each EU country. In addition<\/strong>\u00a0, 341 students have received a\u00a0\u00a0special mention for the\u00a0 exceptional quality of its translations<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

The winner in Spain of this 18th edition of the contest is Leonor G\u00f3mez \u00c1lvarez<\/strong>\u00a0, from the IES Miguel de Cervantes in Murcia, with a translation from English to Spanish.<\/p>\n

Piotr\u00a0\u00a0Serafin<\/strong>\u00a0, Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration, congratulated the winners and thanked all the participants and their teachers for their enthusiasm. He also wanted to convey a message about the importance of language learning: \u201cLearning and practising foreign languages \u200b\u200bis essential to understanding other cultures. Learning a new language helps us to open our minds and broaden our horizons. Now more than ever, the world needs this understanding and this feeling of tolerance\u00a0. \u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The awards ceremony will take place on 10 April in Brussels.<\/p>\n

During the visit, the 27 young translators will meet with the European Commission’s translators to see how they work, and will enjoy a unique opportunity to discover each other’s languages \u200b\u200band cultures. Last year’s Swedish winner, Ivar Lasses, said:\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>”\u00a0Juvenes Translatores<\/em>\u00a0has made me believe in the ‘European project’.”<\/p>\n

Since 2007, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation has organised the\u00a0Juvenes Translatores<\/em>\u00a0competition every year , funded by the\u00a0\u00a0Erasmus+ programme .
