{"id":155982,"date":"2025-01-16T03:00:15","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T02:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=155982"},"modified":"2025-01-15T10:45:09","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T09:45:09","slug":"rutte-to-meps-we-are-safe-now-we-might-not-be-safe-in-five-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/rutte-to-meps-we-are-safe-now-we-might-not-be-safe-in-five-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Rutte to MEPs: \u201cWe are safe now, we might not be safe in five years\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Monday afternoon, MEPs discussed the security situation in Europe and beyond as well as defence and EU-NATO cooperation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/europe-palace-5414751_1280.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-155983 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/europe-palace-5414751_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"732\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/europe-palace-5414751_1280.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/europe-palace-5414751_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/europe-palace-5414751_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/europe-palace-5414751_1280-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his first public discussion with MEPs from the Foreign Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on Security and Defence and Parliament\u2019s delegation for relations with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly since taking office as NATO Secretary General, Mr Rutte said he is deeply concerned about the security situation in Europe. \u201cWe are not at war, but we are not at peace either,\u201d he said, mentioning challenges from states such as Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, but also lingering threats in the form of terrorism, nuclear proliferation, disinformation and climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said, however, that: \u201cWe know how to protect our peoples and the European way of life (&#8230;), now we just have to do it\u201d, talking about the need to invest more in defence capabilities and assets, to boost resilience and to continue supporting Ukraine. A stronger European defence means spending more, spending better and producing more, Mr Rutte argued, not to provoke war, but to prevent it. \u201cNATO\u2019s current two percent defence spending target is not nearly enough (&#8230;) to stay safe, NATO allies will have to spend considerably more. This also includes ramping up the production of crucial assets and capabilities,\u201d he said. \u201cThe European defense industry is doing truly impressive work, but the truth is that we are not where we need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Ukraine, the NATO Secretary General said that the future of Europe hinges on the outcome of the war. \u201cWe want lasting peace there. If Putin gets it his way, peace will not last,\u201d he stressed, adding that EU support to Ukraine is crucial: \u201cWe are safe now, we might not be safe in five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MEPs: What can Europe do for NATO<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding EU-NATO cooperation, MEPs quizzed Mr Rutte on the EU contribution. Defence is not limited to military issues: it includes international relations, as well as social, economic and diplomatic relations, a number of MEPs stressed. MEPs also asked about future cooperation with the incoming Trump Administration and expressed concern about the role of T\u00fcrkiye in NATO.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other MEPs pointed out that there are differences between NATO allies on defence issues, but staying united is necessary to secure a sustainable peace in Ukraine. They also highlighted the difficult security situation in Mediterranean and Western Balkans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On boosting military industry, MEPs enquired about the avoidance of duplication in military production as well accelerating the development of weapons.
