The winners of this year’s edition of the Lorenzo Natali Prize, which showcases the EU’s commitment to support journalists around the world, were announced on 26 at a ceremony hosted at the Residence Palace, in Brussels.<\/p>\n

The 2024 winners are:<\/p>\n

For the Best Emerging Journalist Prize<\/strong>: Jamaima Afridi was awarded this prize for her investigative work on the challenges Afghan refugees face in Pakistan, particularly Afghan women impacted by the Taliban’s return to power. Her reporting sheds light on their struggles with housing, healthcare, and employment. Her impactful investigation, titled \u2018As Pakistan begins second phase of deportation, Afghan women fear what lies ahead’ was published in\u00a0Dawn\u00a0media.<\/p>\n

For the Investigative Journalism Prize<\/strong>: a trio of French journalists formed by Mathilde Cusin, Manon de Cou\u00ebt and Martin Boudot were awarded this prize for their report \u2018Armes, l’h\u00e9ritage toxique’\u00a0aired on\u00a0France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions. Their investigation focuses on the environmental dangers posed by unexploded ordnance and military waste in Normandy, emphasising the need for urgent action to address this toxic legacy.<\/p>\n

For the Feature Journalism Prize<\/strong>: the journalists Gabriela Ram\u00edrez and Tina Xu won this prize for their the article entitled \u2018Widowed by Europe’s borders’ published in\u00a0Unbiased The News. Their compelling article highlights the personal stories of families affected by challenges faced on European migration routes, emphasising the emotional impact of loss and separation.<\/p>\n

For the Special Award \u2013 Photojournalism:\u00a0<\/strong>Bienvenido Velasco was recognised for his work \u2018Las redes sociales, el enga\u00f1o que anima a miles de migrantes por la selva del Dari\u00e9n’ published in\u00a0Agencia EFE. This piece reveals the harsh realities faced by migrants navigating the dangerous Dari\u00e9n Gap, driven by false promises spread through social media. It emphasises the need for greater awareness and support for vulnerable populations undertaking such risky journeys.<\/p>\n

The selection process and the Jury<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Over 1\u00a0200 journalists from across the globe submitted applications this year. A pre-selection was carried out by four journalism schools\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Universidade Cat\u00f4lica Portuguesa\u00a0(Portugal),\u00a0Universidad de Navarra\u00a0(Spain),\u00a0Universit\u00e9 Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth\u00a0(Lebanon), and\u00a0Vesalius College\u00a0(Belgium) and the final winners were selected by a Grand Jury composed of five internationally renowned experts from the world of journalism:\u00a0Inday Espina-Varona,\u00a0Stefanie Glinski,\u00a0Ntibinyane Alvin Ntibinyane,\u00a0Delia Rodr\u00edguez\u00a0and\u00a0Artur Romeu.<\/p>\n

Showcasing EU support to media around the world<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Award ceremony was an opportunity to discuss key challenges faced by independent media and showcase EU action in support to media around the world. On this occasion, three EU-funded projects backing independent and pluralistic media were also presented:<\/p>\n
