The article presents a handful of findings from the more detailed\u00a0Statistics Explained article on monthly asylum statistics.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ecl-u-type-heading-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Syrians, Afghans and Venezuelans remain the largest groups of asylum seekers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In August 2024, Syrians remained the largest group of people seeking asylum (13\u00a0340 first-time applicants), followed by Afghans (5\u00a0605) and Venezuelans (4\u00a0690).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ecl-u-type-heading-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Germany, Spain, France and Italy received 70% of first-time applicants<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Germany (18\u00a0425), Spain (10\u00a0580), France (10\u00a0035) and Italy (9\u00a0620) continued to receive the highest number of first-time asylum applicants, accounting for 70% of all first-time applicants in the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU total rate of first-time asylum applicants in August 2024 was 15.4 per hundred thousand people. Compared with the population of each EU country (on 1 January 2024), the highest rates of first-time applicants were recorded in Greece (59.9), ahead of Ireland (31.5).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ecl-u-type-heading-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2\u00a0980 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">A total of 2\u00a0980 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in the EU, with most of them coming from Syria (1\u00a0090), Afghanistan (360), Egypt (275) and Somalia (225).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU country that received the highest number of asylum applications from unaccompanied minors was Germany (715), followed by Bulgaria (480), the Netherlands (440), Greece (365) and Belgium (230)<\/p>\n<p><strong>More information: <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20241120-1\">Eurostat<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In August 2024, 69\u00a0270\u00a0first-time asylum applicants\u00a0(non-EU citizens) applied for\u00a0international protection\u00a0in\u00a0EU\u00a0countries, a fall of almost a quarter (24.8%) compared with August 2023 (92\u00a0055).
