{"id":154031,"date":"2024-10-25T09:51:55","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T07:51:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=154031"},"modified":"2024-10-25T09:51:55","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T07:51:55","slug":"how-to-defend-yourself-against-disinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/how-to-defend-yourself-against-disinformation\/","title":{"rendered":"How to defend yourself against disinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In today&#8217;s complex digital and media landscape, citizens must become more resilient against disinformation.<\/strong> This is where media literacy can help, by enhancing critical thinking and helping citizens better navigate information, especially online, and identify and counter disinformation.\u00a0<strong>Between 24 and 31 October, we mark Global Media and Information Literacy week,<\/strong> an occasion to raise awareness about the importance of promoting media and information literacy for all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/desinformacion.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-94188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/desinformacion.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/desinformacion.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/desinformacion-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU supports EU countries and civil society in taking <strong>measures<\/strong> that develop media literacy skills and the Commission facilitates the sharing of best practices. <strong>Guidelines and toolkits<\/strong> have also been developed for teachers to help them ensure digital literacy through education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In the context of the 2024 European elections<\/strong>, the\u00a0Commission also released a number of awareness-raising products for wide and continuous use by citizens and professionals, and ran an EU-wide campaign, together with the European Regulators Group for Audiovisual Media Services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO)<\/strong> also brings together fact-checkers, academia and other relevant stakeholders. Supported by the Commission, EDMO contributes to identifying best practices in the field of media literacy, promoting knowledge exchange and to carrying out awareness-raising campaigns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Disinformation, misinformation and foreign information manipulation and interference are a serious threat to democracy and societies<\/strong>. 86% of Europeans agree with this, noting that the rapid spread of disinformation is a major problem for democracy, according to an EU survey.
