These projects show\u00a0<strong>how the EU, through Cohesion Policy, delivers change on the ground<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>strengthens economic and social progress in the EU.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 2024 edition received\u00a0<strong>a record-breaking number of submissions<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>262 applications\u00a0<\/strong>to compete for the top prize in five different categories. These categories reflect the objectives of the Policy including the political priorities of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/regional_policy\/information-sources\/legislation-and-guidance\/regulations_en\">2021\u20132027 Cohesion Policy programming period.<\/a>\u00a0There is also a public choice award, where\u00a0<strong>25 finalists<\/strong>\u00a0were shortlisted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The 2024 REGIOSTARS Award Winners are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Category 1 &#8211; A Competitive and Smart Europe<\/strong>: An\u00a0<strong>Interreg Italy-Malta project<\/strong>\u00a0referred to as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/italiamalta.eu\/progetti\/funded-projects\/bythos\/?lang=en\">Bythos<\/a>&#8216; took the prize in this category. The project\u00a0<strong>recycles and reuses by-products or waste materials<\/strong>\u00a0from the fish processing industry to\u00a0<strong>create new ingredients\u00a0<\/strong>for animal and human consumption. These ingredients are also used<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Category 2 &#8211; A Green Europe<\/strong>: The \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itccanarias.org\/web\/es\/actividad\/proyectos\/biogreenfinery\">Biogreenfinery<\/a>&#8216; project from Spain was recognised for being an innovative platform detailing\u00a0<strong>the technical and economic feasibility of producing alternative fuels<\/strong>\u00a0such as green hydrogen and other synthetic fuels. The fuels produced will overall contribute to the\u00a0<strong>energy transition in the Canary Islands.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Category 3 &#8211; A Connected Europ<\/strong><strong>e:\u00a0<\/strong>The Interreg North Sea Region project,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/northsearegion.eu\/bits\">\u2018BITS: Bicycles and Intelligent Transport Systems<\/a>&#8216;, makes use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) with\u00a0<strong>over thirty innovative pilot schemes\u00a0<\/strong>aimed at improving the safety and comfort of cyclists in the North Sea Region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Category 4 &#8211; A Social and Inclusive Europe<\/strong>: A project in Hungary,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/efop2224.maltai.hu\/\">\u2018Health Development Programme &#8211; Telemedicine for the Most Deprived Settlements&#8217;,<\/a>\u00a0won the award for its technological and software solutions to ensure\u00a0<strong>the roll-out of telemedicine in emerging settlements.\u00a0<\/strong>The service utilises\u00a0<strong>mobile clinics to provide access to adequate modern medical care and preventive care<\/strong>\u00a0in the vicinity of patients&#8217; homes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Category 5 &#8211;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>A Europe Closer to Citizens<\/strong>: The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lis.gdynia.pl\/\">\u2018Gdynia OdNowa&#8217; revitalisation project<\/a>\u00a0in Poland took the prize for this category. The project covers three degraded districts, and\u00a0<strong>actively involves residents in decision-making processes<\/strong>\u00a0and overall encompasses\u00a0<strong>civic participation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like every year, the public are invited to vote for their favourite project amongst the shortlisted finalists. The\u00a0<strong>public&#8217;s clear favourite<\/strong>\u00a0this year which garnered the highest number of online votes (3,274 out of over 20,000 total votes), earning the\u00a0<strong>Public Choice Award<\/strong>, was the Interreg Italy-Malta project \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/italiamalta.eu\/progetti\/funded-projects\/bythos\/?lang=en\">Bythos<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The REGIOSTARS Awards is\u00a0<strong>a yearly competition<\/strong>\u00a0organised by the European Commission since 2008.
