{"id":15348,"date":"2019-04-02T08:00:02","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T06:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=15348"},"modified":"2019-04-01T09:41:40","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T07:41:40","slug":"meps-agree-on-future-regional-and-cohesion-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/meps-agree-on-future-regional-and-cohesion-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"MEPs agree on future regional and cohesion funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Parliament adopted last Wednesday<strong> new funding rules to strengthen the EU\u2019s economic, social and territorial cohesion<\/strong>, with 475 votes to 93 and 53 abstentions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Nuevas-reglas-internas-del-PE-para-garantizar-la-transparencia-la-eficiencia-e1549266236536.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12371 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Nuevas-reglas-internas-del-PE-para-garantizar-la-transparencia-la-eficiencia-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Nuevas reglas internas del PE para garantizar la transparencia y la eficiencia\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The updated rules, which will apply<strong> from 2021 to 2027<\/strong> to th<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/regional_policy\/es\/funding\/erdf\/\">e European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)<\/a> and the Cohesion Fund (CF), will cover all regions, with s<strong>pecial focus on less developed communities, urban areas and outermost regions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MEPs agreed on spending a significant part of the ERDF, which is by far the largest public EU fund, on smart growth and the green economy. The text stipulates that regions should spend at least 30% to 50% of the funding received on a smart, innovative Europe, and at least 30% on the<strong> fight against climate change and the circular economy<\/strong>. The Cohesion Fund continues to focus on investment in environmental and transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h2>More focus on regions and cities<\/h2>\n<p>MEPs believe that the management of EU funds should take into account the territorial, economic and social diversity of European regions, which benefit the most from cohesion policy. EU funding would therefore be allocated at regional level based on gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, rather than at member state level, based on gross national income ratio, as has been the case until now.
