identify\u00a0<strong>respect for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law\u00a0<\/strong>(38%) and<strong>\u00a0economic, industrial, and trading power\u00a0<\/strong>(34%) as the<strong>\u00a0main strengths<\/strong>\u00a0of the EU, followed by the good relationships and solidarity between the EU Member States (28%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/guillaume-perigois-HL4LEIyGEYU-unsplash-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-132458\" justify;\">As areas the EU should\u00a0<strong>address as a priority,<\/strong>\u00a0respondents most frequently mention the\u00a0<strong>environment and climate change<\/strong>\u00a0(33%) and\u00a0<strong>irregular migration<\/strong>\u00a0(also 33%), followed by\u00a0<strong>security and defence<\/strong>\u00a0(29%) and the\u00a0<strong>war in Ukraine<\/strong>\u00a0(25%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the same time, the\u00a0<strong>war in Ukraine<\/strong>\u00a0ranks first in terms of\u00a0<strong>challenges<\/strong>\u00a0that the EU is facing, mentioned by 50% of the respondents.\u00a0<strong>Irregular migration\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>environmental issues and climate change<\/strong>\u00a0follow in second and third place, respectively, with 41% and 35%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When asked about the\u00a0<strong>values\u00a0<\/strong>that are best embodied by the EU compared to other countries in the world, Europeans clearly indicate respect for\u00a0<strong>fundamental rights<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>and values<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0freedom of speech and expression (each at 53%).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>Overall optimism about the years to come<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">58% of Europeans tend to be\u00a0<strong>optimistic about the future of the EU<\/strong>, while 37% tend to be pessimistic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">55% of them say they are very or somewhat\u00a0<strong>confident in the strength of the EU&#8217;s democracy in the next five years<\/strong>, while 41% are somewhat or very unconfident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other hand, 64% of EU citizens tend to be\u00a0<strong>concerned about the EU&#8217;s security<\/strong>\u00a0in the next five years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, 51% express\u00a0<strong>confidence in the performance of the EU&#8217;s economy<\/strong>\u00a0in the next five years, while 45% are more sceptical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Flash Eurobarometer 550 was conducted between 25 June and 2 July 2024 across the 27 Member States. 25,658 EU citizens were interviewed online.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
