In 2013, the EU rate stood at 16.1% and it has decreased steadily since then, with the only exception being the COVID-affected 2020 when an increase was reported (from 12.6% in 2019 to 13.8% in 2020, followed by 13.1% in 2021).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2023, NEET rates among young adults varied considerably across EU countries, ranging from 4.8% in the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong> to 19.3% in <strong>Romania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2013-2023.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2013-2023.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2013-2023.png 1920w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2013-2023-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2013-2023-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2013-2023-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2013-2023-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2013-2023-1280x720.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reducing this rate is one of the targets of the European Pillar of Social Rights. The goal is to lower the NEET rate of young people aged 15-29 to 9% by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Data show that, in 2023, a third of the EU countries were already below the 2030 target of 9%, namely the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong> (4.8%), <strong>Sweden<\/strong> (5.7%), <strong>Malta<\/strong> (7.5%), <strong>Slovenia<\/strong> (7.8%), <strong>Luxembourg<\/strong> (8.5%), Ireland (8.5%), <strong>Denmark<\/strong> (8.6%), <strong>Germany<\/strong> (8.8%) and <strong>Portugal<\/strong> (8.9%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In most EU countries, there were differences between the shares of NEET young women and young men. In 2023, 12.5% of young women aged 15\u201329 in the EU were NEET, while the corresponding share among young men was 10.1%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023.png 4000w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023-2048x1152.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/young_people_neither_employment_education_training_2023-1280x720.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 4000px) 100vw, 4000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lowest NEET rates for young men and women were both in the Netherlands: 4.0% for young men and 5.6% for young women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In contrast, the highest NEET rate for young men was recorded in Greece (14.8%), and the highest for women in Romania (24.8%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The shares of NEET young women were lower than the associated share of men in <strong>Estonia<\/strong> (8.9% vs 10.2%) and <strong>Belgium<\/strong> (9.5% vs 9.8%), while <strong>Portugal<\/strong>, <strong>Spain<\/strong>, <strong>Finland<\/strong> and <strong>Sweden<\/strong> recorded roughly the same shares of NEET men and women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>More information: <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20240613-1\">Eurostat<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2023, more than one in ten (11.2%) young people aged 15 to 29 in the\u00a0EU\u00a0were\u00a0neither in employment nor in education or training\u00a0(NEET), a decrease of 0.5\u00a0percentage points (pp) compared with 2022.
