{"id":152011,"date":"2024-06-04T03:00:13","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T01:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=152011"},"modified":"2024-06-03T13:16:14","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T11:16:14","slug":"irans-drones-and-missiles-eu-adopts-further-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/irans-drones-and-missiles-eu-adopts-further-sanctions\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran&#8217;s drones and missiles: EU adopts further sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The Council adopted restrictive measures against <strong>six individuals<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>three entities<\/strong>\u00a0for their role in the transfer of \u00a0unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Russia in support of its war of aggression against Ukraine;the transfer of UAVs or missiles to armed groups and entities undermining peace and security in the Middle East and the Red Sea region; \u00a0or for being involved in Iran\u2019s UAV programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Iran-sancion.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Iran-sancion.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1151\" height=\"649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Iran-sancion.png 1151w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Iran-sancion-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Iran-sancion-1024x577.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Iran-sancion-768x433.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1151px) 100vw, 1151px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The listings include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Khatam al-Anbiya<\/strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0Central Headquarters (KCHG) \u2013 a central entity in the command chain of Iran\u2019s armed forces making operational military decisions about the deployment of UAVs \u2013 and one of its commanders<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Kavan Electronics Behrad<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0LLC \u2013 an Iran-based company procuring and selling components for the manufacturing of UAVs \u2013 together with its CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy<\/strong>\u00a0(IRGCN), which is involved in the delivery of Iranian arms, including Iranian UAVs and missiles to be used by armed groups like the Houthis and Hezbollah in the Middle East and Red Sea region<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Furthermore, the Council decided to list the\u00a0<strong>Minister of Defence<\/strong>\u00a0of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad-Reza Gharaei Ashtiani, a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qods Force (IRGC-QF), and the head of EU-listed Iranian Aviations Industries Organizatio<a>n (IAIO), Afshin Khaji Fard.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Those targeted will be subject to an\u00a0<strong>asset freeze<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>travel ban<\/strong>\u00a0to the European Union. Additionally, the\u00a0<strong>provision of funds or economic resources<\/strong>, directly or indirectly, to or for the benefit of natural or legal persons, entities or bodies listed is\u00a0<strong>prohibited<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-expands-scope-of-sanctions-against-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-expands-scope-of-sanctions-against-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU expands scope of sanctions against Iran<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In its conclusions of 21 and 22 March 2024, the European Council stated that Russia\u2019s access to sensitive items and technologies with battlefield relevance must be restricted to the maximum extent possible, including by targeting entities in third countries enabling this circumvention. Moreover, the European Council stated that the Union would continue to work intensely with regional and international partners to prevent further regional escalation, notably in Lebanon and the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In its conclusions of 17 April 2024, the European Council strongly and unequivocally condemned the Iranian drone and missile attack on Israel, called on Iran and its proxies to cease all attacks, and urged all parties to exercise the utmost restraint and to refrain from any action that may increase tensions in the region. Furthermore, the European Council stated that the EU would take further restrictive measures against Iran, notably in relation to UAVs and missiles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 14 May 2024, the Council broadened the scope of the EU framework for restrictive measures in view of Iran\u2019s military support of Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine, so as to cover both drones and missiles, as well as the Iranian drone and missile programme\u2019s support for armed groups and entities in the Middle-East and the Red Sea region.
