This includes over \u20ac1 million just approved to respond to the devastating floods in Brazil, which in past weeks have affected 90% of the territory of Rio Grande do Sul.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/humanitarian-aid.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-140766 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/humanitarian-aid.jpg\" alt=\"Nagorno-Karabakh\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/humanitarian-aid.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/humanitarian-aid-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/humanitarian-aid-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/humanitarian-aid-120x120.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Part of this funding will also be dedicated to reinforcing disaster preparedness, as the region is exposed to natural hazards that are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The announcement comes as Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez\u00a0<strong>Lenar\u010di\u010d<\/strong>, is visiting Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. Today in Bridgetown, Barbados the Commissioner will also sign a Memorandum of Understanding with several regional organisations and governments to increase cooperation in disaster risk management between the EU and Latin American and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The largest allocation of EU funding is for\u00a0<strong>Venezuela<\/strong>, with nearly \u20ac50 million. Most of the funding will help tackle the consequences of the protracted humanitarian crisis in the country and its regional impacts, while \u20ac5 million will be dedicated to disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In\u00a0<strong>Colombia<\/strong>, as people continue to suffer the impact of armed conflicts, \u20ac11 million are allocated for humanitarian aid. In addition, \u20ac5 million are earmarked for disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the rest of\u00a0<strong>South America<\/strong>, funding amounts to \u20ac22 million. This includes \u20ac14 million to respond to the main humanitarian needs, notably forced displacement that continues to be a major issue across the subregion, of which \u20ac2 million for the response to the internal crisis in\u00a0<strong>Ecuador,\u00a0<\/strong>and the mentioned \u20ac1 million for the floods in Brazil. The remaining \u20ac8 million will go to disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/entra-en-vigor-el-acuerdo-ue-america-central\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/GMaepc4XoAAcO9z-768x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-central-america-agreement-enters-into-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU-Central America agreement enters into force<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In\u00a0<strong>Central America<\/strong>, \u20ac17 million will support the response to the main humanitarian crises, mainly resulting from chronic violence and the record numbers of displaced people on the move. An additional million is earmarked for disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As already announced in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/mex_24_1466\">March<\/a>, \u20ac20 million in humanitarian aid were released for\u00a0<strong>Haiti<\/strong>, where the EU recently launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/mex_24_2145\">Humanitarian Air Bridge<\/a>. For the rest of the\u00a0<strong>Caribbean<\/strong>, over one million euros will go to humanitarian aid, notably in response to the migration flows stemming mostly from Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti, and another \u20ac1 million for disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, an additional amount of \u20ac1.5 million has just been allocated to respond to the\u00a0<strong>dengue outbreak in Central and South America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Reinforcing disaster risk management<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new Memorandum of Understanding will be signed today in Barbados during a ceremony co-hosted by the European Union, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), and the government of Barbados. The MoU brings together the European Union and the LAC region through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the Coordination Centre for the Prevention of Disasters in Central America and Dominican Republic (CEPREDENAC), the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) and the General Secretariat of the Andean Community (SGCAN), as well Chile, Cuba and Mexico. It will strengthen joint work on disaster preparedness and prevention and foster information sharing and training opportunities.
