{"id":151508,"date":"2024-05-17T03:00:52","date_gmt":"2024-05-17T01:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=151508"},"modified":"2024-05-16T12:06:53","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T10:06:53","slug":"eu-expands-scope-of-sanctions-against-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-expands-scope-of-sanctions-against-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"EU expands scope of sanctions against Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The Council has decided to broaden the scope of the EU framework for restrictive measures in view of Iran\u2019s military support of Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-151506 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pexels-lara-jameson-8828624-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This framework, adopted in July 2023, currently\u00a0<strong>prohibits the export of\u00a0<\/strong>components used in the construction and production of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (<strong>UAVs<\/strong>) from the EU to Iran, and provides for\u00a0<strong>travel restrictions\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>asset freeze measures\u00a0<\/strong>against persons responsible for, supporting or involved in\u00a0<strong>Iran\u2019s UAV\u2019s programme<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In view of Iran\u2019s continuing military support of\u00a0<strong>Russia\u2019s war\u00a0<\/strong>of aggression against Ukraine as well as of\u00a0<strong>non-state armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region<\/strong>, and following the Iranian drone and missiles attacks against\u00a0<strong>Israel\u00a0<\/strong>on 13 April 2024, the Council decided that the EU\u2019s ability to impose restrictive measures will now cover not only UAVs, but\u00a0<strong>missiles\u00a0<\/strong>too. The EU will now be able to target persons and entities supplying, selling or otherwise being involved in transferring Iran\u2019s missiles and UAVs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">in support of\u00a0<strong>Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">used by armed groups and entities to undermine peace and security in the\u00a0<strong>Middle-East\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a0<strong>Red Sea region<\/strong>, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">in breach of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216 (2015)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Those targeted will be subject to an\u00a0<strong>asset freeze\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>travel ban\u00a0<\/strong>to the European Union. Additionally, the\u00a0<strong>provision of funds or economic resources<\/strong>, directly or indirectly, to or for the benefit of natural or legal persons, entities or bodies listed is\u00a0<strong>prohibited<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Furthermore, it will be\u00a0<strong>prohibited to export further components<\/strong>\u00a0used in the development and production of UAVs from the EU to Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Background<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">On 14 April 2024, the EU condemned in the strongest terms the Iranian drone and missile attacks against Israel on 13 April 2024, as an unprecedented escalation and a threat to regional security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In its conclusions of 21-22 March 2024, the European Council called on third parties, including Iran, to immediately cease providing material support to Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In its conclusions of 17 April 2024, the European Council strongly and unequivocally condemned the Iranian attack on Israel and reiterated its full solidarity with the people of Israel and commitment to Israel\u2019s security and to regional stability. The European Council called on Iran and its proxies to cease all attacks and urged all parties to exercise the utmost restraint and to refrain from any action that may increase tensions in the region. Furthermore, the European Council stated that the EU would take further restrictive measures against Iran, notably in relation to UAVs and missiles.
