By 2039, tertiary treatment (for nitrogen and phosphorus removal) must be applied in all water treatment plants covering 150,000 population equivalents and above, and by 2045 from 10,000 population equivalents. Additional treatment to remove micropollutants (quaternary treatment) will be mandatory for plants from 150,000 population equivalents (and more than 10,000 population equivalents based on a risk assessment) by 2045.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 88.1861%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d; height: 270px;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/nuevas-normas-de-la-union-europea-para-un-tratamiento-y-un-control-mas-eficientes-de-las-aguas-residuales-urbanas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Agua-Potable.jpg\" width=\"297\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/es\/press-room\/20240408IPR20307\/nuevas-reglas-para-mejorar-tratamiento-y-reutilizacion-del-agua-residual-urbana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New EU standards for more efficient urban wastewater treatment and monitoring<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Monitoring will be tightened for several health parameters (such as known viruses and emerging pathogens), chemical contaminants, including substances that remain long in water (such as perfluoroalkylated and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS)), microplastics and antimicrobial resistance.<br \/>\nThe regulation introduces the principle of extended producer responsibility for medicinal products for human use and cosmetics, to cover the costs of quaternary treatment (to remove micropollutants). At least 80% of the cost will be borne by manufacturers, supplemented by national funding.<br \/>\nNational authorities should promote the reuse of treated wastewater in plants, especially in water-stressed areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Statement by the rapporteur<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/meps\/en\/114268\/NILS_TORVALDS\/home\">Nils Torvalds<\/a> (Renew, Finland) said: &#8220;This legislation will improve water management and wastewater treatment standards in Europe, especially with regard to micropollutants from medicines and personal care products. We have ensured that the impact of the legislation on the affordability of medicines will not be disproportionate and that the most harmful contaminants, such as PFASs, will be adequately monitored and dealt with&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Council must formally approve the agreement before it enters into force.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/ES\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX:52022PC0541\">proposal presented by the Commission in October 2022<\/a> is in line with the EU&#8217;s objectives in the field of climate action, circular economy and pollution reduction.
