An initial, \u20ac500 million tranche was signed in Madrid by EIB Director General for European Union Operations, Jean-Christophe Laloux, and Iberdrola Finance, Control and Corporate Development Director Jos\u00e9 Sainz Armada.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/electricity.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-82399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/electricity.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/electricity.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/electricity-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/electricity-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/electricity-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/electricity-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The total investment under the project amounts to \u20ac1.44 billion, with the remaining \u20ac740 million provided by Iberdrola. The aim is to improve the efficiency and resilience of the power grid, enable more renewable-energy sources to be connected and facilitate new uses such as heat pumps and electric vehicles driving forward energy transition and decarbonisation of the Spanish electricity sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The project will also boost industrialisation, economic growth and job creation in Spain, safeguarding 10 000 jobs a year in 12 autonomous communities during the implementation period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The finance contract underscores the EIB&#8217;s commitment to economic, social and territorial cohesion, with more than 65% of the total investment going to Spanish regions where per-capita income is below the EU average.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The loan is part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/en\/projects\/sectors\/energy\/repowereu\">EIB\u2019s plan of action<\/a>\u00a0to back\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_22_3131\">REPowerEU<\/a>\u00a0and will support energy security by facilitating the integration of renewable energy and reducing the EU\u2019s dependence on imports of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSupporting power-grid modernisation to facilitate the integration of new sources of renewable energy is among the priorities included in the EIB Climate Bank Roadmap,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>EIB Director General of Operations in the European Union Jean-Christophe Laloux<\/strong>. \u201cThis new financing agreement signed with Iberdrola will accelerate Spain&#8217;s energy transition, ensure access to sustainable energy for all and contribute to the European Union\u2019s strategic and energy independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Iberdrola Finance, Control and Corporate Development Director Jos\u00e9 Sainz Armada<\/strong>\u00a0added: \u201cThis loan will enable us to speed up the decarbonisation of industry, a key process for Spanish companies. We will use this new EIB financing to expand smart grid development in Spain, as this is vital for facilitating the energy transition, boosting efficiency and improving the distribution network and supply quality. We will also contribute to the electrification of the economy and reducing the country\u2019s energy dependence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The EIB and energy security<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2023, the EIB Group provided more than \u20ac21 billion for energy security in Europe. In the same year, it allocated \u20ac4.5 billion to this goal in Spain, financing projects in areas including renewable energy, energy efficiency, power grids and storage systems. These investments are helping Europe to speed up the transition to using sustainable energy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuel imports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/spain-eib-and-otua-sign-e40-million-loan-to-back-the-construction-of-a-waste-recycling-plant-in-the-basque-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/052788e5-01a6-41b0-a83c-db000a664014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/spain-eib-and-otua-sign-e40-million-loan-to-back-the-construction-of-a-waste-recycling-plant-in-the-basque-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain: EIB and Otua sign \u20ac40 million loan to back the construction of a waste recycling plant in the Basque Country<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In July\u00a02023, the EIB Board of Directors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/en\/press\/all\/2023-270-eib-to-support-green-deal-industrial-plan-with-eur45-billion-in-additional-financing\">raised the amount earmarked for REPowerEU projects to \u20ac45\u00a0billion<\/a>. REPowerEU is the plan designed to end Europe\u2019s dependence on fossil fuel imports. To boost financing for the EU manufacturing industry, the EIB will also expand the range of eligible sectors to include leading strategic technologies with net-zero carbon emissions, as well as extraction, processing and recycling of critical raw materials. The additional financing will be disbursed between now and 2027. In total, it is expected to mobilise more than \u20ac150\u00a0billion in investment in the target sectors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Power grids as a key pillar of the energy transition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Power grids are a vital platform for transitioning to a carbon-free economy with more renewable energy, attractive industry, sustainable mobility, smart cities and self-supply. Distribution networks are a key element in enabling economy-transforming initiatives and trends like electric mobility, heat pumps, self-supply and smart cities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Union recently increased its total renewable energy use target in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/es\/press\/press-releases\/2023\/10\/09\/renewable-energy-council-adopts-new-rules\/\">Europe to 42.5%<\/a>\u00a0by 2030 (up from 32%). An equal amount of investment is expected to be needed in both generating renewable energy and upgrading power grids to bring this energy to customers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iberdrola operates ones of the largest electricity distribution systems in the world.
