Around 20,400 people were killed in road crashes in the EU last year, a small 1% decrease on 2022. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/accident-785442_1280.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149817 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/accident-785442_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/accident-785442_1280.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/accident-785442_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/accident-785442_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/accident-785442_1280-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite some progress since the baseline year of 2019<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>, few Member States are on track to meet the EU and UN target of halving the number of road deaths by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Contrasting picture across Member States<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">EU-wide, road deaths in 2023 fell by 1% on the previous year. While this represents around 2,360 fewer fatalities (-10%) compared with 2019, the downward trend has flatlined in several Member States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since 2019, the number of road deaths has scarcely fallen in Spain, France and Italy, while it has risen in Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Sweden. In contrast, over the last four years, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Hungary and Poland are on track to meet the 50% reduction target in road deaths and serious injuries by 2030<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The overall ranking\u00a0of countries&#8217; fatality rates has not changed significantly,\u00a0with the safest roads still found in Sweden (22 deaths per one million inhabitants) and Denmark (27\/million). Bulgaria (82\/million) and Romania (81\/million) reported the highest fatality rates in 2023. The\u00a0EU average\u00a0was\u00a046 road deaths per million inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Most affected groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The available EU-wide data for 2022 (<em>detailed 2023 data is not yet available<\/em>) shows that 52% of road traffic fatalities occurred on rural roads, versus 38% in urban areas and 9% on motorways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The trend in the number of cyclists killed on EU roads is a serious concern: more than 2,000 cyclists were killed in 2022. This is the only main road user group not to see a significant drop in fatalities over the last decade, notably due to a persistent lack of appropriate infrastructure and unsafe behaviour of all road users such as speeding, distraction and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Men accounted for three out of four road deaths (77%). People aged 65+ are at greater risk, as they represented 29% of all road deaths while they account for 21% of the population. Similarly, young people aged 18-24 accounted for 12% of road deaths but 7% of the population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Car occupants (drivers and passengers) represented 45% of all fatalities, while pedestrians accounted for 18%, users of powered two-wheelers (motorbikes and mopeds) 19%, and cyclists 10%. The patterns change significantly depending on age. Among those aged 65+, pedestrians represent 29% of fatalities and cyclists 17%. See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/road-safety.transport.ec.europa.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-03\/collision_matrix_2024_update.png\">here<\/a>\u00a0the latest collision matrix detailing the main vehicles involved in fatal road crashes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within\u00a0urban areas, vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists and users of powered two-wheelers) represent almost 70% of total fatalities. Urban road user fatalities occur overwhelmingly when a crash involves cars and lorries, underlining the need to improve protection of these vulnerable road users.\u00a0See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/road-safety.transport.ec.europa.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-03\/collision_matrix_urban_2024_update.png\">here<\/a>\u00a0the latest collision matrix for urban roads.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/la-comision-advierte-del-prolongado-descenso-de-fallecidos-en-carretera-desde-la-pandemia\/ target=\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/pexels-life-of-pix-7674-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/commission-highlights-prolonged-decline-in-road-traffic-fatalities-since-the-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission highlights a slow decline in road traffic fatalities since the pandemic<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2018, the EU set itself a 50% reduction target for road deaths \u2013 and, for the first time, also serious injuries \u2013 by 2030. This was set out in the Commission&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/resource.html?uri=cellar%3A0e8b694e-59b5-11e8-ab41-01aa75ed71a1.0003.02\/DOC_2&amp;format=PDF\">Strategic Action Plan on Road Safety<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/op.europa.eu\/en\/publication-detail\/-\/publication\/d7ee4b58-4bc5-11ea-8aa5-01aa75ed71a1\">EU road safety policy framework 2021-2030<\/a><u>,<\/u>\u00a0which also laid out road safety plans aiming to reach zero road deaths by 2050 (\u2018Vision Zero&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In March 2023, the Commission put forward\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/transport.ec.europa.eu\/news-events\/news\/european-commission-proposes-updated-requirements-driving-licences-and-better-cross-border-2023-03-01_en\">a package of proposals<\/a>\u00a0tackling road safety, including updated requirements for driving licences and better cross-border enforcement of road traffic rules.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Road safety has also been a core element of recent EU mobility policy initiatives, including the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/transport.ec.europa.eu\/transport-themes\/mobility-strategy_en\">Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy<\/a>, the new TEN-T regulation and the Urban Mobility Framework. In its proposal for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/transport.ec.europa.eu\/news-events\/news\/commission-proposes-list-principles-boost-cycling-across-europe-2023-10-04_en\">European Declaration on Cycling<\/a>, the Commission acknowledges that safety is a prerequisite to encourage people to cycle, and is working to prepare guidance for quality requirements regarding vulnerable road users, including cyclists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Along with today&#8217;s statistics, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/road-safety.transport.ec.europa.eu\/european-road-safety-observatory_en\">European Road Safety Observatory<\/a>\u00a0also published a new annual statistical report and an updated series of country profiles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>More information: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_1361\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Commission is publishing preliminary figures on road fatalities for 2023.
