Fresh vegetables were cultivated on 2.0 million hectares of land across the EU in 2022, on which 59.8 million tonnes of crops were harvested.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4033167-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149664 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4033167-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4033167-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4033167-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4033167-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4033167-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4033167-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4033167-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The three most commonly grown fresh vegetables \u2013 in quantity terms \u2013 were tomatoes (15.4 million tonnes of harvested production), onions (6.2 million tonnes) and carrots (4.4 million tonnes).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2022, the EU produced 14.7 million tonnes of pome fruit (12.6 million tonnes of apples and 2.1 million tonnes of pears), 10.5 million tonnes of citrus fruit, 6.3 million tonnes of stone fruit (such as peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, and plums), 2.6 million tonnes of sub-tropical and tropical fruit (such as figs, kiwis, avocados, and bananas), 1.1 million tonnes of nuts and 0.7 million tonnes of berries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">This article presents just a handful of information from the\u00a0<a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/documents\/15216629\/18054337\/KS-FK-23-001-EN-N.pdf\/048e130f-79fa-e870-6c46-d80c9408620b?version=7.0&amp;t=1707290893751\">Key Figures on the European food chain<\/a>, 2023 edition and the\u00a0<a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=The_fruit_and_vegetable_sector_in_the_EU_-_a_statistical_overview&amp;stable=0&amp;redirect=no\">Statistics Explained article on the fruit and vegetable sector in the EU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Production of certain fresh vegetables was concentrated in specific EU countries. For example, Italy accounted for 40% of the EU\u2019s harvested tomatoes in 2022, followed by Spain (24%) and Portugal (9%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149658 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022.png 4000w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022-2048x1152.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vegetables-production-2022-1280x720.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 4000px) 100vw, 4000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Netherlands was the leading onion producer, with nearly one quarter (24%) of the EU\u2019s harvested onions, ahead of Spain (20%) and France (12%).
