It introduces strict requirements that prohibit placing on the EU market products containing F-gases and specific phase-out dates for the use of F-gases in sectors where it is technologically and economically feasible to switch to alternatives that do not use F-gases, such as domestic refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20230612IPR97101\/eu-strengthens-efforts-to-restore-and-protect-the-ozone-layer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deal on reducing emissions of ozone-depleting substances<\/a>\u00a0(ODS) was adopted with 538 votes in favour, eight against and 13 abstentions. The law introduces requirements to recover and recycle such substances in building materials during renovations (found in particular in insulation foams), which is the main source of remaining ODS emissions in the EU. It also introduces strict exemptions for their use as feedstock (to produce other substances, for example in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry), as process agents, in laboratories and for fire protection.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/el-objetivo-de-la-ue-es-disminuir-drasticamente-los-gases-de-efecto-invernadero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pexels-sergio-aguirre-13569831-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-eus-goal-is-to-drastically-reduce-greenhouse-gases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The EU\u2019s goal is to drastically reduce greenhouse gases<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following the final votes in plenary, the Council will now have to formally endorse the texts before their publication in the EU Official Journal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fluorinated greenhouse gases, such as hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride and nitrogen trifluoride (used in refrigerators, air-conditioning, heat pumps, fire protection, foams or electrical switchgear equipment) and ozone-depleting substances, such as halons (used in fire extinguishers), methyl bromide (to control pests) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (used in fridges and air-conditioning systems) are man-made greenhouse gases (GHG) with high global warming potential.
