It will identify the challenges, priorities for action, and possible policy solutions to the issue of shortages of critical medicines in the EU. The Alliance is a\u00a0<strong>consultative mechanism<\/strong>\u00a0that will also act as a<strong>\u00a0network<\/strong>\u00a0to accelerate the delivery of EU action in this field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A new industrial dimension to the European health Union<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Critical Medicines Alliance will become the industrial arm of a strong European Health Union. It will develop recommendations and provide advice to the Commission, Member States and other EU decision makers on how to address long-standing medicines shortages. Building on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/news\/first-version-union-list-critical-medicines-agreed-help-avoid-potential-shortages-eu\">Union list of critical medicines<\/a>\u00a0published by the European Medicines Agency in December 2023, it will focus on medicines with the highest risk of shortages and the highest impact on healthcare systems and patients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Alliance will help\u00a0<strong>unlock manufacturing, contractual or financing solutions<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>to allow better strategic autonomy<\/strong>\u00a0for critical medicines, in the interest of European citizens. It will build on the experience from other EU alliances that address major industrial challenges (such as the Batteries and Critical Raw Materials Alliances) and will be able to rely on a varied toolbox of policy measures, such as:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Exploring how to\u00a0<strong>diversify global supply chains<\/strong>\u00a0through\u00a0<strong>strategic international partnerships<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Boosting Europe&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>capacity to produce and innovate<\/strong>\u00a0in the manufacturing of critical medicines and their ingredients, in coordinated way;<\/li>\n<li>Developing a\u00a0<strong>common strategic approach to medicines stockpiling<\/strong>\u00a0in the EU;<\/li>\n<li>Helping to\u00a0<strong>leverage and align EU and national<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>funding to implement solutions to medicines shortages<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-commission-publishes-first-eu-list-of-essential-medicines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/pexels-polina-tankilevitch-3873146-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"148\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-commission-publishes-first-eu-list-of-essential-medicines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission publishes first EU list of essential medicines<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Open to all<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Critical Medicines Alliance is open to all companies and organisations, Member States, local and regional authorities and their agencies, social partners, civil society, health professionals, patients, consumers as well as other stakeholder groups, EU bodies and agencies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who are interested should complete the interest form available on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/!JMwrTB\">website<\/a>\u00a0of the Alliance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Alliance will last for 5 years. It is expected to start its work this coming Spring and publish its first recommendations on actions to take to improve the supply of critical medicines by this Autumn.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Commission adopted on 24 October 2023 a Communication presenting actions to better prevent and mitigate critical medicine shortages in the EU for this winter and beyond. Recent critical shortages, including of certain antibiotics, show that continued coordinated action is needed to make Europe&#8217;s medicine supply chains more resilient in the long run.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Communication puts a particular focus on the most critical medicines, for which security of supply in the EU must be ensured at all times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Communication builds on the work under the European Health Union, notably the reinforced mandate of the European Medicines Agency and the recently published pharmaceutical reform.
