There&#8217;s another reason why people decorate earlier and tap into the excitement of the holidays before the rest of us. It has to do with a chemical reaction in our brains. Putting up the Christmas tree, and breaking out the sparkling lights and wreaths to soak up the spirit of the holidays, improves our moods chemically. Decorating boosts the feel-good hormone dopamine.<\/p>\n<h6 class=\"c-article__title\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8216;Tis the season to be happy<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But what is it about brightening up our homes in the festive spirit that activates happy hormones? It&#8217;s the shiny lights, brilliant colours \u2013 and nostalgia. \u201cFor most people, decorating for Christmas reminds us of the best times in our lives,\u201d <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/living\/story\/scientific-excuse-decorate-house-earlier-christmas-decorating-boost-58309191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained<\/a> psychotherapist and bestselling author Amy Morin. \u201cThinking of those happy memories stirs up happy feelings.\u201d \u201cWhen you&#8217;re putting up decorations, you&#8217;re thinking of happier times, times with family and friends and family traditions you engaged in,\u201d she added. \u201cFor some people it&#8217;s bittersweet &#8212; if family members are no longer here &#8212; but it&#8217;s still a way to connect.\u201d<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/a-que-edad-somos-mas-felices-cordis-responde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/familia-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/at-what-age-are-we-happiest-cordis-answers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At what age are we happiest? CORDIS answers<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h6 class=\"c-article__title\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Opening the door to new possibilities<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Seminal <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0272494489800106?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a> on the topic showed that decorating the outside of homes makes others think the people inside are more welcoming and sociable. \u201c[Decorations] can lead to more positive conversations and they&#8217;re an easy way to strike up a conversation,\u201d elaborated Morin. \u201cIt helps build a sense of community and belonging and all those things are associated with happiness too.\u201d Let&#8217;s not forget the tradition of giving during the holiday season, yet another powerful motivator. \u201cAltruism increases in the month of December and as people start to give more and donate more, it makes them happy,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt makes people feel good so they want to start celebrating as early as possible.\u201d Science offers a perfect excuse to take a faster approach to the holiday festivities. Now what does science say about putting the decorations away? No studies on this yet.
