This global initiative will help to keep the Paris Agreement objective of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flame-2720980_1280.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-147211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flame-2720980_1280.jpg\" alt=\"metano\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flame-2720980_1280.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flame-2720980_1280-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flame-2720980_1280-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/flame-2720980_1280-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/statement_23_6259\">Statement<\/a>, President\u00a0<strong>von der Leyen<\/strong>\u00a0presented the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_23_5776\"><strong>first-ever EU law to curb methane emissions<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<strong>in the energy sector<\/strong>, with world-leading standards for measuring, detecting, and stopping emissions in the EU and globally.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The EU and its Member States\u00a0<strong>announced \u20ac175 million in support of the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Methane Finance Sprint<\/strong>\u00a0to boost methane reduction at the Summit. These funds will help catalyse efforts from government, industry, and philanthropy to reduce methane emissions across the energy sector, including by enabling the methane data revolution with the use of new satellites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President\u00a0<strong>von der Leyen<\/strong>\u00a0also announced that the\u00a0<strong>Commission will develop a roadmap for the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>global rollout of the \u201cYou Collect, We Buy\u201d scheme by COP29.\u00a0<\/strong>This scheme incentivises companies to capture and commercialise gas that would otherwise go to waste through venting and flaring, thereby bolstering climate action and energy security. The\u00a0<strong>EU and Algeria will pilot together this scheme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-position-for-cop28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/COP28.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-position-for-cop28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU position for COP28<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Global Methane Pledge,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/speech_21_5770\">launched<\/a>\u00a0by President\u00a0<strong>von der Leyen<\/strong>\u00a0and President Biden at COP26 in 2021, is the main coordination platform for global methane emissions reduction. More than 150 signatories are now committed to at least a 30% global reduction in anthropogenic methane emissions by 2030, focusing on the energy, agriculture, and waste sectors. The strong global support for the Pledge illustrates the growing momentum to swiftly reduce methane emissions.\u00a0 \u00a0It is co-chaired by the EU and the United States, and works with two UNEP bodies, namely the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO). Through the CCAC, the Global Methane Pledge has supported more than 50 countries in developing national methane action plans, and through the IMEO it has conducted a number of scientific studies and developed a Methane Alert and Response System for super-emitting events. This year Canada, the Federated States of Micronesia, Germany, Japan, Nigeria,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccacoalition.org\/news\/new-global-methane-pledge-champions-call-accelerated-action-methane-keep-15degc-within-reach\">became Global Methane Pledge Champions<\/a>\u00a0alongside the EU and the US.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU provides technical, political, and financial support for methane emissions reduction efforts globally, including through the \u201cYou Collect, We Buy\u201d scheme, while ensuring the implementation of the new methane emissions rules<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>domestically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 1 December, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/explore-topics\/energy\/what-we-do\/methane\/about-imeo#:~:text=IMEO's%20Methane%20Science%20Studies%20enhance,data%20and%20improved%20measurement%20methods.\">UNEP\u00a0International Methane Emissions Observatory<\/a>\u00a0released the first public methane emissions data through its Methane Alert and Response System as another development for effective tracking.
