If you were to count the statues in your local town, village or city, how many would you find that represent women?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Despite women making up more than half of the population of Europe, most of the statues you come across commemorate the lives of men.<\/p>\n

Many statues of women that do exist tend to depict women as a concept \u2013 used for aesthetic or allegorical purposes \u2013 rather than specific female historical figures or their achievements.<\/p>\n

Goddesses<\/h3>\n

The world of religion has always given us female statues \u2013 just think of Greek and Roman goddesses like Aphrodite, Venus\u00a0andMinerva. And many Christian statues exist of female saints and, in particular, Mary, mother of Jesus.<\/p>\n

Royal women<\/h3>\n

But even though you maybe need to look a bit harder to find statuesque examples of real, named and notable women, there are some wonderful examples.<\/p>\n

In many countries, royal women are popular. For example, it\u2019s estimated that\u00a0nearly half of the statutes depicting women in the UK are of Queen Victoria<\/a>, as well as other queens like\u00a0Queen Louise<\/a>,\u00a0Catherine the Great,<\/a>\u00a0Empress Josephine<\/a>\u00a0and more.<\/p>\n

Female icons<\/h3>\n

In France, many statues depict Joan of Arc, such as these examples from Paris,\u00a0Saint Etienne<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Orleans<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>In Amsterdam, you can find statues of a queen (Wilhelmina), a diarist (Anne Frank) and a singer (Tante Leen).\u00a0Further afield, we find actors such as\u00a0Wenche Foss in Oslo<\/a>, poets\u00a0and\u00a0writers like\u00a0Agnieszka Osiecka in Warsaw<\/a>\u00a0and nurses such as\u00a0Edith Cavell in London<\/a>\u00a0depicted on statues.<\/p>\n

Carving a place for female statues<\/h3>\n

But overall, women are still in the minority on statues. Now, some organisations and projects like ArtUK are\u00a0documenting how many statues commemorate women<\/a>\u00a0and those like\u00a0Invisible Women<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Erect More Women<\/a>\u00a0are trying to make a change by campaigning for more statues commemorating women\u2019s achievements.<\/p>\n
