This must be taken into account when analysing data for 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2021, the top three countries with the highest breast cancer screening rates for women aged 50 to 69 years, who had received a mammography within the previous two years, were the Nordic EU countries: Denmark (83.0%), Finland (82.2%) and Sweden (80.0%). Malta (77.8%) and Slovenia (77.2%) followed closely behind. At the other end of the range, the lowest breast cancer screening rates were registered in Bulgaria (20.6%), Cyprus (24.6%), Slovakia (25.5%), Hungary (29.8%) and Latvia (30.8%).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Compared with 2011, breast cancer screening rates increased in 6 of the 20 EU countries with available data, with the largest increases observed in Malta (+26.9\u00a0<a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Percentage_point\">percentage points (pp)<\/a>), Lithuania (+12.9 pp) and Estonia (+7.7 pp). In 13 EU countries, breast cancer screening rates decreased between 2011 and 2021. Decreases exceeding 10.0 pp were observed in Luxembourg (-16.3 pp), Ireland (-12.1 pp) and Hungary (-10.6 pp).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-144258 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"4001\" height=\"2251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123.png 4001w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123-1280x720.png 1280w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vis1-cancer-031123-2048x1152.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 4001px) 100vw, 4001px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/union-europea-de-la-salud-nuevo-enfoque-sobre-el-cribado-del-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/accuray-5VkNa1LrS8A-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-health-union-new-approach-on-cancer-screening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Health Union: new approach on cancer screening<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Greece recorded the highest availability of mammography machines<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2021, the highest availability of mammography units (machines designed exclusively for taking mammograms) per 100\u00a0000 inhabitants for women aged 50-69 years, was recorded in Greece (7.1 units) and Cyprus (5.9 units). The rate of mammography units was also high in Belgium (3.6), Italy (3.4) and Croatia (3.3). By contrast, the lowest availability was observed in Germany (0.5 units), France (0.7), Romania (0.9), and Poland (1.0), followed by Luxembourg, Czechia and Estonia (all with 1.1 units per 100\u00a0000 inhabitants).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The largest increases between 2011 and 2021 in the availability of mammography units per 100\u00a0000 inhabitants were recorded in Greece (+1.6 units), Cyprus and Bulgaria (both +1.2). By contrast, the availability of these units decreased in 9 out of the 24 EU countries with data available.
