Misinformation is false or misleading content shared without harmful intent though the effects can be still harmful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The spread of both disinformation and misinformation can have a range of harmful consequences, such as threatening our democracies, polarising debates, and putting the health, security and environment of EU citizens at risk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Large-scale disinformation campaigns are a major challenge for Europe and require a coordinated response from EU countries, EU institutions, online platforms, news media and EU citizens. The Commission has developed a number of initiatives to tackle disinformation:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>the Communication on \u2018tackling online disinformation: a European approach\u2019 is a collection of tools to tackle the spread of disinformation and ensure the protection of EU values;<\/li>\n<li>the Action plan on disinformation aims to strengthen EU capability and cooperation in the fight against disinformation;<\/li>\n<li>the European Democracy Action Plan develops guidelines for obligations and accountability of online platforms in the fight against disinformation;<\/li>\n<li>The 2018 Code of Practice on disinformation was the first time worldwide that industry has agreed, on a voluntary basis, to self-regulatory standards to fight disinformation. It aimed at achieving the objectives set out by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/library\/communication-tackling-online-disinformation-european-approach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission&#8217;s Communication presented in April 2018<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-european-union-will-extend-geographical-indications-to-artisanal-and-industrial-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/IMG_20230322_121951-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/jornadas-lucha-contra-la-desinformacion-la-seguridad-nacional-en-el-marco-de-la-estrategia-de-la-ue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jornadas \u201cLucha contra la desinformaci\u00f3n: la Seguridad Nacional en el marco de la estrategia de la UE\u201d<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>the COVID-19 disinformation monitoring\u00a0 programme, carried out by signatories of the Code of Practice, acted as a transparency measure to ensure online platforms\u2019 accountability in tackling disinformation.<\/li>\n<li>EDMO is an independent observatory bringing together fact-checkers and academic researchers with expertise in the field of online disinformation, social media platforms, journalist driven media and media literacy practitioners<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/code-practice-disinformation\">Strengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation<\/a>, signed on 16th June 2022, brings together a wide range of players to commit to a broad set of voluntary commitments to counter disinformation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"ecl-u-type-m ecl-u-bg-grey-15 ecl-u-border-width-8 ecl-u-border-left ecl-u-border-color-grey\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>More information: <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/online-disinformation\">European Commission<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Commission is tackling the spread of online disinformation and misinformation to ensure the protection of European values and democratic systems.
