The proposal aims to ensure that <strong>all operators handling pellets in the EU take the necessary precautionary measures<\/strong>. This is expected to reduce pellet release by up to 74%, leading to cleaner ecosystems, contributing to plastic-free rivers and ocean, and reducing potential risks to human health. Common EU-wide measures will also help level the playing field for operators.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Tackling preventable pellet losses<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Plastic pellets are the one of the largest sources of unintentional microplastic pollution. The Commission proposes that operators act in the following priority order: prevention to avoid any spills of pellets; containment of spilled pellets to make sure they do not pollute the environment; and, as a final option, clean up after a spill or loss event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The proposal includes:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Best handling practices\u00a0<\/strong>for operators: depending on the size of the installation or transport activity, operators will have to abide by certain best handling practices. These have already been implemented by frontrunners.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandatory certification and self-declarations<\/strong>: To assist national competent authorities in verifying compliance, larger operators should obtain a certificate issued by an independent third party, while smaller companies should make self-declarations of their conformity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A harmonised methodology to estimate losses<\/strong>: to help operators monitor their losses and tackle some of the remaining data gaps, a harmonised methodology will be developed by standardisation bodies. It should also increase accountability by increasing awareness of the impacts of different practices on the environment and human health.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lighter requirements for SMEs<\/strong>: as the pellet supply chain has a large share of SMEs, lighter requirements will apply especially to micro and small operators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/la-comision-europea-adopta-medidas-para-restringir-el-uso-de-microplasticos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/marc-newberry-9vcEn3BJyy8-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-commission-adopts-measures-to-restrict-the-use-of-microplastics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission adopts measures to restrict the use of microplastics<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Commission proposal for a Regulation on preventing pellet losses will now be discussed by the European Parliament and the Council.
