Our expert Marion Fourquez weighs in on the value of tipping metal shavings into the sea.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_140404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-140404\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/445991.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-140404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/445991.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/445991.jpg 688w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/445991-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-140404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 bennymarty\/stock.adobe.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<div class=\"row c-article__below-teaser\">\n<div class=\"c-article__domains col-12 col-md-auto\">\n<div class=\"c-article__domains-icons\">\n<div class=\"c-domain-icon c-domain-icon--text\">\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c<em><strong>The answer is both yes and no, and it should not be tested again,<\/strong><\/em>\u201d says Fourquez, a polar oceanographer at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography in France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The \u2018iron hypothesis\u2019 proposes that sprinkling huge amounts of iron into the ocean will boost growth of photosynthetic algae at the ocean surface, drawing carbon out of the atmosphere, and in doing so, lower global temperatures. The idea of using metal fillings in this way was first suggested by oceanographer John Martin in 1988, who said: \u201cGive me a half tanker of iron, and I will give you an ice age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Early experiments proved the iron hypothesis held water \u2013 fertilising the oceans with iron did increase algal growth. Since then, there have been over a dozen experiments in the ocean to test its impact, though these have generated controversy as the scientific consensus has solidified against the idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve learned that dumping iron into the ocean actually helps to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere,\u201d adds Fourquez. But she says it\u2019s far more complicated than that. Experiments measuring how much carbon has fallen into the deep ocean from these artificial fertilisations have consistently shown that the maths simply doesn\u2019t add up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__title\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Natural and unnatural iron<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Humans aren\u2019t the only ones putting iron into the sea. In the Southern Ocean for example, iron comes from upwelling, as well as sea ice and surface ice melt. These nutrients are a key factor maintaining the ecosystem\u2019s health. \u201cA lot of sources are a lot more efficient at stimulating phytoplankton compared to iron dumped into the ocean,\u201d Fourquez explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In fact, much of the artificially added metallic iron simply rusts and sinks far from sunlight, where there are no phytoplankton to make use of it. Iron from natural sources, by contrast, is effectively bound to certain types of molecules that help to keep it soluble in surface waters. Yet the extent to which phytoplankton can access this type of iron is not well understood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the EU-funded BULLE project, Fourquez and her colleagues researched the ratio of the CO2 consumed and produced in the world\u2019s oceans, to help improve estimations of oceanic carbon capture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The team discovered that the amount of iron available greatly impacts CO2 levels in microbial respiration. In July this year, Fourquez published a new study in \u2018Science Advances\u2019 highlighting the extreme complexity of iron bioavailability to phytoplankton in seawater. This research supports the idea that the iron found in nature and that used in fertilisation projects are not at all equivalent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Attempting to engineer this natural cycle could end in failure \u2013 or worse, have a catastrophic impact on the natural ecosystem. \u201cWe can\u2019t recreate the complexity of what nature offers at the moment,\u201d says Fourquez.
