They also support stronger EU defence cooperation and increased defence spending.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While inflation remains a major concern, perceptions of the economic situation and economic expectations are improving. A majority of Europeans believe that NextGenerationEU, the EU&#8217;s \u20ac800 billion recovery plan, can be effective to respond to the current economic challenges. Support for the euro stays high.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Wide support for the energy transition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More than eight in ten EU citizens think that the EU should\u00a0<strong>invest massively in renewable energies<\/strong>, such as wind and solar power (85%) and that increasing\u00a0<strong>energy efficiency<\/strong>\u00a0of buildings, transport, and goods will make us less dependent on energy producers outside the EU (82%). In addition, 80% believe that EU Member States should\u00a0<strong>jointly buy energy<\/strong>\u00a0from other countries to get a better price.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Furthermore, 81% of respondents agree that reducing imports of oil and gas and investing in renewable energy is\u00a0<strong>important for our overall security<\/strong>\u00a0and 82% say that the EU should\u00a0<strong>reduce its dependency on Russian sources of energy<\/strong>\u00a0as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Strong backing for the EU&#8217;s response to Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Approval for actions taken in response to Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine remains very high.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">88% of EU citizens are in favour of\u00a0<strong>providing humanitarian support<\/strong>\u00a0to the people affected by the war and 86% are in favour of\u00a0<strong>welcoming into the EU people fleeing the war<\/strong>. 75% approve of\u00a0<strong>financial support to Ukraine<\/strong>\u00a0and 72% back\u00a0<strong>economic sanctions<\/strong>\u00a0on Russian government, companies and individuals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, 66% agree with banning state-owned media, such as Sputnik and Russia Today, from broadcasting in the EU and 64% support financing the\u00a0<strong>purchase and supply of military equipment<\/strong>\u00a0to Ukraine. 64% also agree with the EU granting\u00a0<strong>candidate status<\/strong>\u00a0as a potential member of the EU to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All in all, 56% of respondents are\u00a0<strong>satisfied with the EU&#8217;s response<\/strong>\u00a0to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and 54% are satisfied with the response by their national government.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/according-to-the-latest-eurobarometer-europeans-appreciate-that-the-eu-provides-expertise-and-assistance-to-the-member-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/guillaume-perigois-HL4LEIyGEYU-unsplash-1024x785.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/according-to-the-latest-eurobarometer-europeans-appreciate-that-the-eu-provides-expertise-and-assistance-to-the-member-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the latest Eurobarometer, Europeans appreciate that the EU provides expertise and assistance to the Member States<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In favour of a stronger European defence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this context, 77% of Europeans are in favour of\u00a0<strong>a common defence and security policy<\/strong>. 80% think that\u00a0<strong>cooperation<\/strong>\u00a0in defence matters at EU level should be increased, 77% believe that Member States&#8217;\u00a0<strong>purchase of military equipment<\/strong>\u00a0should be better coordinated, 69% would like the EU to reinforce its\u00a0<strong>capacity to produce military equipment<\/strong>\u00a0and 66% say that\u00a0<strong>more money should be spent on defence<\/strong>\u00a0in the EU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A stronger Europe in the World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">77% agree that the EU should\u00a0<strong>build partnerships with countries outside the EU<\/strong>\u00a0to invest in sustainable infrastructure and connect people and countries around the world. In addition, 69% believe that the EU has sufficient power and tools to defend the economic interests of Europe in the global economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Levels of trust in the EU have considerably risen in most candidate countries since winter 2022-2023. The highest level of trust is observed in Albania (77%, +6), followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina (57%, +7), Montenegro (54%, +7), North Macedonia (48%, +1), Moldova (44%, +2), T\u00fcrkiye (41%, +12) and Serbia (32%, +2).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>An improved economic environment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Economic perceptions have significantly improved<\/strong>. 45% of respondents now think that the\u00a0<strong>situation of the European economy is good<\/strong>\u00a0(+5 pp since January-February), slightly outweighing the number thinking it is bad (44%, -7 pp). 40% describe the economic situation in their own country as good (+5 pp) and 58% as bad (-8 pp).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">55% of Europeans think that the EU recovery plan worth \u20ac800 billion,\u00a0<strong>NextGenerationEU<\/strong><strong>, can be an effective measure<\/strong>\u00a0to respond to the current economic challenges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the euro area,\u00a0<strong>support for the single currency remains very high<\/strong>\u00a0(78% vs. 17%), while it is slightly lower for the EU as a whole (71% vs. 23%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Inflation still a major concern, but less than at the beginning of the year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">27% of Europeans think that \u2018<strong>rising prices\/inflation\/cost of living<\/strong>&#8216; is one of the two\u00a0<strong>most important issues facing\u00a0<u>the EU<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0at the moment (-5 pp since January-February). The\u00a0<strong>international situation<\/strong>\u00a0comes second at 25% (-3 pp), closely followed by\u00a0<strong>i<\/strong><strong>mmigration<\/strong>\u00a0(24%, +7 pp) and the \u2018<strong>environment and climate change<\/strong>&#8216; (22%, +2 pp).\u00a0<strong>Energy supply<\/strong>\u00a0(16%, -10 pp)\u00a0<strong>has seen a sharp decrease<\/strong>, dropping from the third position to the sixth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When asked about the two\u00a0<strong>most important issues facing\u00a0<u>their country<\/u><\/strong>, 45% identified \u2018<strong>rising prices\/inflation\/cost of living<\/strong>&#8216; (-8 pp), largely before the economic situation (18%, +1 pp), the \u2018environment and climate change&#8217; (16%, +2 pp), immigration (14%, +5 pp) and health (14%, no change). Concerns for energy supply have sharply decreased (12%, -7 pp), falling from the second to the fifth position.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The general perception of the EU remains stable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most general indicators remain stable. Notably, 47% of the EU population\u00a0<strong>tend to\u00a0<\/strong><strong>trust the EU<\/strong>\u00a0while 32% tend to trust national governments. 45% tend not to trust the EU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">45% of EU citizens have a\u00a0<strong>positive image of the EU<\/strong>, 18% a negative image and 37% a neutral image.
