{"id":137514,"date":"2023-06-14T03:00:19","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T01:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=137514"},"modified":"2023-06-13T13:46:56","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T11:46:56","slug":"eu-steps-up-the-fight-against-antimicrobial-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-steps-up-the-fight-against-antimicrobial-resistance\/","title":{"rendered":"EU steps up the fight against antimicrobial resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Commission welcomes the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.consilium.europa.eu\/doc\/document\/ST-9581-2023-INIT\/en\/pdf\">adoption<\/a>\u00a0by the Council of the European Union of the Commission&#8217;s proposal to strengthen EU action against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/medicine-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-90460 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/medicine-1024x716.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"784\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/medicine-1024x716.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/medicine-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/medicine-768x537.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/medicine-1536x1074.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/medicine-2048x1432.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Announced together with the Commission&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_23_1843\">revision of the pharmaceutical legislation<\/a>\u00a0on 26 April, the AMR Recommendation helps combat AMR in the fields of human, animal and environmental health, following the so-called One Health approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Recommendation focusses on\u00a0<strong>infection prevention and control<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>surveillance and monitoring<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>innovation and availability of efficient antimicrobials<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>prudent use and cooperation among Member States and globally<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-parliament-calls-for-prudent-use-of-antibiotics-and-more-support-for-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/antibiotic-blur-cocktail-glass-33248.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-parliament-calls-for-prudent-use-of-antibiotics-and-more-support-for-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Parliament calls for prudent use of antibiotics and more support for research<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several EU targets, developed with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecdc.europa.eu\/en\">European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control<\/a>\u00a0(ECDC), are set for 2030:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>a 20% reduction of the total consumption of antibiotics in humans;<\/li>\n<li>at least 65% of the total consumption of antibiotics in humans should be effective (use of the right antibiotic);<\/li>\n<li>a reduction of infections of three key antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which will apply mainly to hospitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These recommended targets for the EU, which are also translated for each national level, will help the EU to tackle AMR taking into account national specificities without compromising patients&#8217; health and safety. They will also allow better monitoring of infections and consumption of antibiotics in the coming years and adjust policy making accordingly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/la-resistencia-a-los-antimicrobianos-sigue-siendo-una-amenaza-para-la-salud-en-europa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/cdc-OZcQIhidMTw-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_6951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antimicrobial resistance remains a health threat in Europe<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This Recommendation also confirms the\u00a0<strong>EU&#8217;s international leadership on AMR<\/strong>\u00a0and calls on the Commission and the Member States to cover AMR in the pandemic agreement currently under negotiation. It also invited to keep AMR high on the agenda of the G7 and G20.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Antimicrobials are crucial medicines. However, over the years, their overuse and misuse have led to increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), meaning that antimicrobials lose their effectiveness, and it becomes more difficult, if not impossible, to treat infections.\u00a0Therefore, the Commission included in the pharmaceutical package in April a proposal for a Council Recommendation containing complementary measures.
