{"id":137275,"date":"2023-06-02T12:43:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T10:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=137275"},"modified":"2023-06-02T12:43:24","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T10:43:24","slug":"european-parliament-calls-for-prudent-use-of-antibiotics-and-more-support-for-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-parliament-calls-for-prudent-use-of-antibiotics-and-more-support-for-research\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament calls for prudent use of antibiotics and more support for research"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" data-view1200=\"6\" data-view1020=\"6\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text ep-layout_chapo\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Parliament adopted its recommendations on Thursday for a coordinated EU response to health threats posed by antimicrobial resistance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/antibiotic-blur-cocktail-glass-33248.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17488 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/antibiotic-blur-cocktail-glass-33248.jpg\" alt=\"C\u00f3ctel lleno de pastillas blanca sobre fondo de color naranja\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/antibiotic-blur-cocktail-glass-33248.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/antibiotic-blur-cocktail-glass-33248-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a resolution passed with 525 votes in favour, two against and 33 abstentions, MEPs say the successful tackling of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires the prudent use of antibiotics for humans and animals, good infection prevention and control measures, and more research and development into novel antimicrobials and alternatives to antimicrobials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MEPs also said that if the measures recommended to member states prove insufficient, further legislative action at the EU level would be needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>National measures to prevent, monitor and reduce the spread of AMR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The text calls on EU countries to put in place, implement and regularly update (at least every two years) \u2018National Action Plans\u2019 against AMR, as a priority for their national health systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To support the prudent use of antimicrobials for human health, MEPs want to improve data collection, including real-time data, both on AMR and antimicrobial consumption. They also ask the Commission to establish an EU-level database.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/la-resistencia-a-los-antimicrobianos-sigue-siendo-una-amenaza-para-la-salud-en-europa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/cdc-OZcQIhidMTw-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_6951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antimicrobial resistance remains a health threat in Europe<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Addressing antimicrobial consumption<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While they agree with the target proposed by the Commission to reduce by 2030 the total human consumption of antibiotics in the EU by 20%, MEPs insist that national measures must also ensure that at least 70% of antibiotics consumed belong to the \u201caccess group\u201d as defined in the WHO\u2019s AWaRe classification (antibiotics that are efficient against a wide range of commonly encountered pathogens while also showing lower resistance potential).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Support for research and prevention of medicines shortages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The resolution calls on member states and the Commission to support research data sharing and technological innovation for the detection, prevention and treatment of infections in humans caused by antimicrobial resistant pathogens. In this context, MEPs say the creation of a European partnership should involve all stakeholders (industry, patient organisations, academia) and should be accessible to SMEs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They underline the importance of coordinating national initiatives on manufacturing, procurement and stockpiling, in order to prevent medicines shortages and significantly improve the continuity of supply of antimicrobials and other AMR countermeasures in the EU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Member states are expected to adopt the Commission proposal for a Council recommendation on combatting AMR in mid-June.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>More information: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/es\/press-room\/20230524IPR91916\/la-eurocamara-reclama-un-uso-prudente-de-los-antibioticos-y-mas-investigacion\">European Parliament<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parliament adopted its recommendations on Thursday for a coordinated EU response to health threats posed by antimicrobial resistance.
