It shows that despite the negative impact of the COVID19 pandemic and the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine,\u00a0<strong>most of the analysed sectors increased their economic performances<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, from 2010 until 2020, there has been a significant increase in the Gross Value Added, the main economic performance indicator, for the sectors in:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>living resources: + 25%;<\/li>\n<li>port activities: + 25%;<\/li>\n<li>offshore wind energy: + 1762%;<\/li>\n<li>ship building and repair: + 22%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And not just that \u2013 the blue economy is offering\u00a0<strong>new job opportunities<\/strong>. The number of employees in the analysed sectors has been increasing, with a peak registered in the offshore wind energy sector, whose employment rate increased by 20 times in just 10 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A sneak peek at the report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Overall, the\u00a0<strong>established sectors<\/strong>\u00a0of the EU blue economy (marine living resources, non-living marine resources, marine renewable energy, port activities, shipbuilding and repair, maritime transport, and coastal tourism) generated a gross value added (GVA) of \u20ac129 billion in 2020, for \u20ac43.6 billion of profit and a total turnover at \u20ac523 billion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the\u00a0<strong>emerging sectors<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>the algae sector is one of the most dynamic<\/strong>\u00a0sub-sectors in blue biotechnology. Available socio-economic estimates show that algae production in Europe generated an annual turnover well above \u20ac10 million in France, Spain and Portugal, the Member States with the largest number of production facilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Together with the findings on established and emerging sectors, the 2023 version includes a chapter on the Energy Transition in the Blue Economy. This section follows the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oceans-and-fisheries.ec.europa.eu\/publications\/communication-commission-energy-transition-eu-fisheries-and-aquaculture-sector_en\">Commission Communication on the Energy Transition of EU fisheries and aquaculture sector<\/a>. It starts a series of analyses on this topic that will support the Energy Transition Partnership on EU Fisheries and Aquaculture. The Partnership will be officially launched on 16 June, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oceans-and-fisheries.ec.europa.eu\/events\/joining-forces-energy-transition-eu-fisheries-and-aquaculture-2023-06-16_en\">registration<\/a>\u00a0is now open.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/the-eu-blue-economy-report-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/blue-economy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/the-eu-blue-economy-report-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The EU blue economy report 2023\/<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<strong>section dedicated to\u00a0<em>Climate Change and Coastal Impact<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a new addition to this year&#8217;s edition. Climate change could profoundly impact coastal zones due to sea level rise, changes in frequency and intensity of storms, coastal floods and erosion. The Commission&#8217;s Joint Research Centre has developed the integrated risk assessment tool\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/data.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/collection\/LISCOAST\">LISCoAsT<\/a>\u00a0(Large scale Integrated Sea-level and Coastal Assessment Tool) to assess its impact on the EU coasts. This tool evaluates the dynamics of coastal flood impacts, adaptation and ecosystem services along the EU27 coastline. This section of the report is dedicated to the latest findings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A new and fresher look to offer better information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, the EU Blue Economy Report returns in 2023 with a fresher look. Starting from this edition, the report will be published in a\u00a0<strong>more concise format<\/strong>. Furthermore, it will be connected to and incorporated into the wider\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blue-economy-observatory.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\">EU Blue Economy Observatory<\/a>, which offers more frequent and dynamic updates to the blue economy data.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU Blue Economy report is the annual flagship publication of the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. It offers an in-depth analysis of the scope and size of our blue economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The blue economy encompasses all economic activities based on or related to the ocean, seas and coasts.
