The findings were published in the <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fpspi0000425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018Journal of Personality and Social Psychology\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"c-article__title ng-star-inserted\"><strong>The science of attraction<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\">A key factor that influences attraction or repulsion is self-essentialist reasoning. \u201cOur attraction to people who share our attributes is aided by the belief that those shared attributes are driven by something deep within us: one\u2019s essence,\u201d explained Asst Prof. Chu in <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/neurosciencenews.com\/self-essentialism-attraction-23007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018Neuroscience News\u2019<\/a>. \u201cTo put it concretely, we like someone who agrees with us on a political issue, shares our music preferences, or simply laughs at the same thing as us not purely because of those similarities, but because those similarities suggest something more\u2014this person is, in essence, like me, and as such, they share my views of the world at large.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\">\u201cWe argue that believing people have an underlying essence allows us to assume or infer that when we see someone who shares a single characteristic, they must share my entire deeply rooted essence, as well,\u201d he further elaborated in a Boston University <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2023\/the-science-of-attraction-why-do-we-fall-in-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/can-brain-training-slow-cognitive-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/442724.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/can-brain-training-slow-cognitive-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Can brain training slow cognitive decline?<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"c-article__title ng-star-inserted\"><strong>The challenge of understanding others\u2019 thoughts and feelings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\">Asst Prof. Chu says this thinking is flawed, and it could be a limiting factor with someone we find a connection. Put simply, we\u2019re not so interested in people who don\u2019t share our passion for things like music, sports and nature. \u201cWe are all so complex. But we only have full insight into our own thoughts and feelings, and the minds of others are often a mystery to us. What this work suggests is that we often fill in the blanks of others\u2019 minds with our own sense of self and that can sometimes lead us into some unwarranted assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\">Let\u2019s not judge someone during our first encounter if they don\u2019t seem similar to us. \u201cThere are ways for us to go through life and meet other people, and form impressions of other people, without constantly referencing ourselves,\u201d concluded Asst Prof. Chu. \u201cIf we\u2019re constantly going around trying to figure out, who\u2019s like me, who\u2019s not like me?, that\u2019s not always the most productive way of trying to form impressions of other people.
