This is one reason why the EU-funded <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/period-h2020.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PERIOD<\/a> project was launched, to see if an alternative to current approaches to manufacturing and assembling space hardware on the ground could be found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<h6 class=\"c-article__title ng-star-inserted\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Robotics and automation in space<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\">In particular, the project sought to examine in-depth the possibility of direct in-orbit manufacturing and assembly, using robotics and automation. \u201cThe advantages of this would be multiple,\u201d explains PERIOD project coordinator St\u00e9phane Estable from <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/en\/space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Airbus Defence and Space<\/a> in Germany. \u201cThese include no more constraints on the overall volume and design of large-scale satellite antennae, and opportunities to construct larger space infrastructures, such as modular space stations.\u201d On top of this, robotic-based in-space manufacturing and assembly technologies could allow for the upgrade and repair of existing spacecraft and satellites. A key barrier to date, however, has been an inability to demonstrate the maturity and integrability of such technology. In other words, could it actually work?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<h6 class=\"c-article__title ng-star-inserted\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Validating in-orbit manufacturing<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\">The main motivation for PERIOD therefore was to further develop and validate promising in-space service technologies. These innovations \u2013 such as a robot operating control system, a sensor data fusion framework, an autonomy goal-oriented framework and an integrated 3D sensors suite \u2013 were developed in the framework of the EU\u2019s <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.h2020-peraspera.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PERASPERA<\/a> Strategic Research Cluster. The project team also tested and benchmarked \u2018standard interconnects\u2019, which would enable modular robotic systems to be combined. \u201cTo achieve this, a lab demonstrator was prepared, which gradually integrated all these technologies together in increments with increasing complexity,\u201d adds Estable. \u201cWe were also able to carry out a robotised assembly sequence of a satellite mock-up, made of two main segments both equipped with a \u2018standard interconnect\u2019.\u201d This work enabled the team to define in detail how robotic technologies could be used together for antenna manufacturing, satellite assembly and satellite refuelling, in orbit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/la-comision-europea-invita-a-la-industria-a-presentar-propuestas-para-la-implementacion-de-la-nueva-constelacion-de-satelites-de-la-ue\/&quot;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Iris2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/european-commission-invites-industry-to-submit-proposals-to-deploy-the-new-eu-secure-connectivity-satellite-constellation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission invites industry to submit proposals to deploy the new EU secure connectivity satellite constellation<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h6 class=\"c-article__title ng-star-inserted\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Advancing cutting-edge technologies<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\">PERIOD was successful in further developing and validating these technologies, and in carrying out a highly detailed benchmarking of three European standard interconnects. In doing so, the project team was able to demonstrate, in the lab, how a robotic-based satellite assembly operation could be carried out, in space. The project also contributed to defining the standards and regulations for in-space services, manufacturing and assembly, which will be important in moving forward. More focused work on this is envisaged in the future. Critically, many of the project outcomes are now available for future activities within the space community. \u201cThe lab demonstrations \u2013 and in-orbit demonstration concept we developed \u2013 will also enable the space community to build the business case for how space systems are designed and operated in the future,\u201d says Estable. \u201cWe will continue developing these technologies, and also continue to carry out lab demonstrations of in-space services with increasing complexity.
